Hey,

I don't know much about engines, so I've been researching if there's any negatives to utilizing the Sport Mode regularly.

I've read a bunch of Bimmer forums, and opinions vary (either yes, overwear on engine etc to no, and some even say that barring the gas consumption, a lot of people use it exclusively as they prefer it).

I figure it's there to be used, right? :)
I am a somewhat (cough) aggressive driver and I'm working on that, I swear. But gas mileage is almost a non-issue for me as I have a literal 5 minute drive to work (I have to drive as it's 35 minute walk and I work night shifts and stop judging me, it's for safety dammit). So when I get a chance to actually go on a drive, I find myself using the Sport Mode a lot.

Just wondering if/when/where you use Sport Mode, and how often?
Letting your car idle before driving is a waste of gas. However, the real killer for a car is short trips, you’ll have water condensate in your oil and your exhaust system. The former will cause oil jelling, the latter corrosion in your pipes. I’ve seen Camrys, RAV4s and Ford Escorts toss an engine at 19 to 25K due to short city trips like yours.

"S" drive mode tightens up the imaginary gear ratios and makes the engine float around 2k RPM while moving, higher (obviously) when you hit the gas. This effectively keeps the car within the powerband at all times pretty much, making acceleration and throttle response MUCH more sensitive and snappy. Throw in the more dedicated way it handles the paddle shifters and the significantly more aggressive fuel cut when letting off the throttle and it's a totally different experience. I love driving in S when I'm starting from a stop, passing, or just driving straight unimpeded. In traffic around town or turning a lot, it sucks.

I feel like I'm in the twilight zone. Guys, you do realize no one had posted to this thread in 3 years until today, right? lol

That will come as quite a surprise to the Honda engineers who set "S" drive mode up. It's a higher revving CVT mode, yes; but it doesn't affect steering whatsover.

Then I have been misinformed. I redact my steering comment. Carry on. I've seen it mentioned but maybe it only applies to the Si?

I think you were mixing up the base 1.5's CVT S mode with the Si's "Sport" mode.

Never really use it. To be honest seems like the normal drive mode with eco on is faster than sport.

If I start from a stop and feel "adventurous" I do L > S > D.

I am in a CVT and the shifter just moves forward if I start it at L, all the way up to N so I assume that's how it is supposed to be used, right?
Right(eous). When I feel the spirit I do L > D > S, but only when I drive in the Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City. It's hilly there.
