a little over 2 years actually....I try to express this point as well. that's a damn long time.
Yep, absolutely zero shame in being bumped down to second. Lol at anyone who thought the current gen CTR would reign forever.

Subaru and VW would kill to hold that first place spot... Even for a second, nevermind for over two years straight :D

This is not true. It was a preproduction car not a production car. Iā€™m sure it was a very close representation of what currently rolls off the assembly line but it had a stripped interior and really none of us can say what other changes the car has as it could have had a tune which is not emissions compliant for all we know. Once they say itā€™s ā€œpreproductionā€ all bets are off as it only means itā€™s a close representation and not exactly a stock car that rolls off the assembly line.
I've wondered about this too. We know the stock cooling system can't handle the heat of a long run- it seems odd to me that the CTR didn't experience any hot air issues or loss of power issues over a balls to the wall, near 8 minute run. Seems to good to be true given how much the stock intercooler underperforms.

Exactly.... and records are meant to be broken.

This does nothing at taking anything away from the type R, all it does is make Honda go back to the drawing board to take the crown back.

Iā€™m happy the record even stood around that long. If you look at the cars the type R has beat or are close to itā€™s actually pretty insane.

Meh... glad to see Renault is putting their money towards breaking the FWD record at the ā€˜Ring and not towards their F1 team like they promised Daniel Ricciardo....

I think that the only bad side of this is that the Renault is not available in the US.

Yes, because the factory division is the same as the F1 division

My understanding is the Type R record run had the following:
1. A roll cage installed
2. Some items were removed(I heard the AC unit) for the purpose of balancing out the weight added by the roll cage
3. Michelin tires were used

The car was 100% the same as the production models aside from the aforementioned.
Can you show us a quote from Honda that states this? The issues with all these times is that manufacturers are coy about these things and "technically representative of production specification" in Honda's own words does not mean 100% same as production.

Undeterred, Honda is back with the new Civic Type R and a new lap of 7:43.80. Which is quite incredible actually, though the same caveats as before sadly apply. We're told the car in the video is again a development vehicle, "technically representative of production specification". Just with a full cage in. And no rear seats. Or infotainment. Offsets the weight gain of the cage, see? Despite Honda's claims that the cage was only for safety and "did not provide any additional rigidity to the body frame", it does rather undermine the lap if that's not how the car will be sold. Many may rubbish the idea of a two-seat Golf GTI, but that means the road car was the same spec as the 'ring record car. At least, we hope it was. For what it's worth, the Civic here was said to be running "road legal track-focused tyres."

Itā€™d be a different story if both came out the same year. But a 2020 design beating a 2017 design is hardly cause for concern.

Actually what you are saying is not true. It was a production car only thing they changed was tires and only removed enough interior to equal the weight of the roll cage they had to add. They set the record in late april 2017 the cars were for sale 3rd week june. With shipping over seas blah blah they were most definitely producing retail Rs when record was set.

I for one, am very glad that Honda is striving for records such as this, whether they put a roll cage for safety or not. (I'm sure corporate insurance mandates such safety measures.) The resulting overall performance translates into a really excellent car.

I love that Honda is still making niche products for us.

The Renault rolls off the factory with pilot sport cup tires. Only way to judge these cars is to have them all run the same tires from the factory.

Agreed. And it's also an unobtanium non mass produced car. Like what 200 or under and comes with a roll cage? Pfft. This doesn't even count / matter to me. Call me when a normal car does it like a Focus RS or something till then this is just nonsense. Neat car, but not a comparison imo due to the one off nature of it.

Which tires were on the Civic that ran the record?
