The top part is a plastic cover. Pull the top back there are screws underneath/inside.
There is another thread in the non-Type R area that has pictures. Search for remove trunk carpet. In addition to the 2 screws, there are 2 plastic pins that just need a bit of force, pull straight up. Do I need to transfer these pins to the R replacement cover?

A warning to all buying a spare tire kit:

I bought a spare kit when I bought my car. To keep a long story short, due to the distance of the dealership, and the dealership selling my kit to another CTR owner by accident, I just got my kit yesterday. I did not want the whole kit installed, just the tire mounted on the wheel. When I got there, the wheel was out of the box and the tire was mounted. But when we went to load all of the parts out of the box, I noticed I had a jack but no lug wrench, jack extension or tow hook. So the parts people went and looked in the other unopened CTR kit they got the same time as mine, and it was also missing these parts.

After discovering this, the dealer called Honda US headquarters, and they went and checked their inventory. Apparently an entire batch of these kits were packaged missing these parts, and they did not find out until my dealer called them today and had them research the issue. Honda told the dealership they were temporarily halting sales across the US until they could figure out the exact issue and check all of the inventory.

So if you try and order a kit, and can't get one for some reason, blame it on me. It is all my fault.

And if you do get a kit, make sure all of the parts are there.

@Jinba-Ittai this sounds exactly like what happened to you, right?

I wish the Spare replacement kit would have provided some larger foam inserts with little storage bins. Those block spacers just seem a bit cheesy and cheap. Specifically I would like to have a proper spot for the pump that came with the car. It would be nice to be able to top off a slow leaking tire if needed. For mine, I was able to put some bubble wrap around mine and there is plenty of space. This wont really last a long term but works for now. Anyone else done anything with all that available space?

Also, the tow hook area in the insert I think was too small for the hook, another oversight? Is the bottom one for the funnel? I don't understand these 2 things either. There is already a spot for the funnel and a tow hook already came with it. Why provide another one? I could have saved a few dollars LOL.

Yeah, this whole kit is clearly just an afterthought. And a poorly-conceived one at that.

I personally knew, once I saw pics of the kit, that I would never use the elevated platform with the kit. I carry too much stuff in my car, and elevating the entire floor when only the tire area needs to be raised just wastes too much space for me. And with only a few foam blocks to support the panel, it is going to warp and distort of anything of any amount of weight is sitting on it. Hell, it will probably warp under its own weight just due to the heat in the summer. So I just put the jack in the side panel and throw either the mini spare or my extra OEM wheel/tire in the back, depending on what I want to carry at that time. The rest of the kit is sitting in my spare bedroom still in the Honda plastic bags.

Now if Honda had made some full-size hard foam inserts (similar to the wheel insert( that form-fit on the sides and provided both more support for the board and some storage pockets, than I might would consider installing the kit. I considered trying to make some myself, and I still might do it. In all my spare time.

I wouldn’t waste my time or money on the spare. You can only use it in town so getting towed is a better option. On the highway those spares aren’t safe. 45 MPH on the freeway could get you killed. When traveling carry a full size spare. Except for a big city no one is going to have your tires in stock. What will be your options then.

Where's everyone getting their spare tire kit? And for how much? I'm trying to shop around but got quoted vastly different numbers.

I'm using these part numbers:

Kit: 06421-TGH-A33ZA
Tire: 42751-CTL-031

Online site wanted $160 + $120 shipping for the kit without the tire.
Dealer wanted $190 for the kit and $155 for the tire.

So I'm looking at $345-ish for the whole thing? Is that about right?

Thanks in advance!

My out the door cost was around 375. I could have traveled 60 miles to my selling dealership for about 40 less, decided it wasn't worth the effort. Your price sounds pretty good.

Having a spare means you can at least drive it (agree not on a highway) while you wait for a tire shop to get a replacement (if needed). I would expect hardly anyone would be able to get the same day replacement done.

Does that include mounting the tire?

This kit is now listed as discontinued on the Honda parts site. Any idea what's up?
