I am interested in buying a new Civic 4dr Hatch with automatic and all the goodies but don't want a lifetime of buying premium fuel. What is the best spec to look at? I noticed some engine specs say premium recommend but regular can be used. I assume that dials back the power? Comments? Thanks!

Of the four trims available in the hatchback, only the "Sport" reccomends premium fuel, it says "regular, premium suggested" all the other trims, including the Touring, reccomend 87 octane, so, no worries about a lifetime of buying premium fuel. My 2019 Touring Coupe runs just fine on the reccomended 87 octane, I do use Toptier fuel (usually Shell) exclusively. Just an FYI, if a brand of fuel meets Toptier standards, all grades of that brand, from 87 to 93 are Toptier.

I have a '19 EX hatch and it runs on regular unleaded (87) fine. But occasionally like once a month I'll drop the mid or premium in it and I do notice a slightly more spirited performance. Not sure if I noticed much gain in mpg. But then again, I'm barely over 2,000 miles on the odo.

hi octane fuels only become mandatory when you are running a tune or if you want every ounce of performance.

i only use 91 octane because i am tuned and do track days etc.

That's not true at all for the hatchbacks. Sport and Sport Touring are both premium recommended (regular required), the LX, EX, and EX-L trims are just regular required (no premium recommendation).

That being said, they'll all run fine on 87, with less power and maybe a few worse MPG for the sport models. But the sport and Sport touring are tuned differently from the other models and will benefit from premium fuel.

You could be correct, I went to the Honda website under "compare trims" the fuel pull-down shows all 4 trims with only the Sport saying premium suggested, the Sport Touring shows regular, could have changed???

Inside the fuel door on my Sport Touring (2018) states Premium Recommended. Since I fill up at 1/4 tank (roughly 9 gallons) and it's a 50 cents difference from regular to premium, I don't sweat the $4.50 with each tank. (So, I take my lunch one day instead of eating out.) On a recent trip from Atlanta to the Gulf Coast and back, I averaged 38.4 mpg using Premium on the freeway calculated with Fuelly, and *not* using Econ mode and that included 2 adults plus a hatch full of luggage.

Not sure what you're looking at but the Honda website has it laid out pretty plain. The fuel door on my 18 S/T says the same about premium.

Apparently the site I was looking at is outdated, my error, the Sport Touring does reccomend premium, when I was researching my 19 Touring Coupe, they listed it as having 17" rims, seems it takes Honda some time to update everything. Thanks for correcting this.

Looks like the EX-L Navi should get you close and still stay with a regular gas engine.

Thanks to all for your comments. I'm still looking, but looking smarter now!

hobby-man - I have been looking for a spreadsheet that shows all the hatchback standards and options compared. Can the one you showed be expanded to all the features?

Scroll down to trims and specs, you should be able to view the whole table

Get the model that you want.
You can use Regular Unleaded on ALL of them. Regardless of "Recommendation", you will not achieve the full power ratings of the vehicle.
As your environment temperature rises, you will notice more and more Timing Pull - which will in turn make you think you have horible turbo lag.
If that is no biggie to you? Then regular unleaded will be just fine.

If a "turbo" is not really in your true interest - look at the 2020 Corrola's and/or Hatchbacks...just a thought
