I just wanted to post this as a warning so you can check yours. I bought my Si on 5/01/18 and yesterday I’ve noticed there’s already rust on the bottom edge of the door. I take meticulous care of this car and always try to keep it dry, so this is ridiculous.

Wow, that's nuts. :banghead: Wonder what Honda would say about that....

I took it to the dealership, they took a bunch of pictures of it and sent them to Honda corporate, they have to approve a warranty repair and if it's approved they will send it to a body shop. Even though this may be rectified which isn't a given, I'm not happy that the car will have touch up paint after only one year of service, lowering the resale value.

Yeah no touch up paint is going to fix that sadly. That is going to need a grind down, primer, paint, blend and clear. I'd almost wish they'd replace the whole door but doubt they would. I'll definitely keep an eye out with my 2019. What door is this on yours?

Yeah, that's what I meant, I still think it's not going to look exactly how it would from the factory. This happened on the driver door on a coupe. Looking at it closer it looks like the entire bottom edge of the door is unpainted.

Wow that might be a manufacturer defect for sure. I'm gonna double check my sedan doors, but I usually wipe them down and never noticed any missing paint.

Friend of mine had an Eagle Talon where neither of the rocker panels were painted from factory. Here in Nova Scotia, they just disintegrated. Not sure what things are like in Michigan, but you may want to check if it’s surface rust, or if it’s through the metal. I got my ‘16 Touring undercoated the week after I bought it, and reapplied annually. Cause Nova Scotia... :(

Michigan winters can be rough too, but I kept it very clean all winter, I washed and dried it almost every other day and never let any salt sit on the car for more than a few hours. I was driving a 2012 Chevy Cruze, it didn't have a spot of rust on it when I sold it for this Honda and I never had any special coating or even washed it very often.

Yup.. "wear and tear" unless you get lucky and you get a "good will" repair. Rust can't start unless something caused the paint to disappear.. whether it was nicked/stones/scratched to remove the paint. Most Japanese brands only have a 5 year outer body rust warranty. Most German brands have a 12 year warranty.

If you look at the picture you can see the door uniformly has no paint on the bottom of it, it's very clearly a manufacturer defect.

Yes, looking at the picture now.. but how did it start? was it just some small stone chips that spread or was it always not painted? Did something scratch the door ? Did it hit something when opening? My presumption is that it was not missing from new. I do admit that Honda paint is much "thinner" than I would have expected. Given the harsh michigan winters, this may not have started a year ago, but maybe only 1-2 months ago.

Someone who "takes meticulous care of his car" would surely have noticed when this started to happen.

BTW, which door is it?

I never scraped it on anything, and nothing has scratched it that I know of. I never noticed it because the door curves inward and it's hidden by the side skirts, when wiping it down I'm looking down while kneeling or standing, so it's pretty difficult to catch until it starts rusting out. I have no idea when it started, but it's been long enough where the paint has bubbled out and is rusting from the inside out, considering the car is exactly 12 months old and how clean I have kept it, it very well could have started on day one.

For the past few years, Honda has had issues with paint across the entire car line. I think it has to do with NON-VOC paints or environmentally safe paints. I have seen the older civics with no rust. This looks like a warranty issue to me. You need to stop the rust ASAP, if you know how, or have a classic car restoration shop do it. They know how to conserve a panel. Most MA & PA body shops do not.

I'm not going to touch it until Honda gives me the verdict on a warranty repair, the last thing I need is future problems to unfold and they won't touch it because another shop worked on it. If they deny the repair I will forward it to the federal trade commission and the BBB and see if they can maintain my consumer rights.

Look you scratch the paint when opening your door on sidewalk .
You did not fix it with paint and now rust appear . Too bad.

Easy to repair :)
