People really shouldn’t put much stock into manufacturer Nurburgring times as there are no governing rules and few of these times are ever attained with stock cars. A “preproduction” car can have several parts that don’t make it to production, several items removed, as well as a tune that doesn’t exactly meet emissions regulations. It’s more for chest thumping, fanboy bragging rights and you can bet whatever time your favorite car puts up will eventually be eclipsed by another manufacturer stretching the truth of what is actually rolling off the assembly line.

Personally I don't give a ..... about it. This won't change the fact CTR is fundamentally the better car. Stripping, tuning and things could go on forever. Beating others times.

I live in Europe, could have bought Megane RS. But even Trophy RS is at least 5k more expensive, does not drive that well(torque steer that rips the wheel from your hands), less convenient. Only thing I liked was the colors - orange/yellow perl. Imagine this special edition slap a 10k extra premium, not to mention expensive to replace tuning parts. Adding 10k euros to 40k euros(CTR price) that's 50k euros. Kind of too much for a Renault / french car. You get into Boxter/Cayman territory.
Even in Europe you see more CTR than Megane RS, lol.

Hopefully, we'll get more cars like this for the US consumers. I feel like there hasn't been too many affordable performance cars in the segment so hopeful this will encourage other car makers to join in and make some pretty cool sports cars.
Im looking at you Mazda o_O

I read starting price in the UK is expected to be 48,000 pounds. And it's going to be stripped down with included roll cage.

Compared to 31,000 pounds for a Type R with backseats.

I like the Type R because it's a daily driver. The fact that the Megane had to go balls out, stripped down race ready to beat the R by 3 seconds just makes the balance achieved by the R even more impressive.

I also haven't read what kind of tires this thing ran, just that they were Bridgestones. Could even be semi-slicks or something idiotic like that.

That's pretty quick. I searched up the last time they had the FWD record and it was around 7:54. They dropped a ton of time. Granted they did this by making the car not street friendly but they did this without any aero.

Actually, I'm glad they did this. Now Honda will try to up their game. A bump of 20-30hp should be easy. I'd go to 255 for a tire width. Aluminum hood and trunk will save some weight. May need some better shocks/struts. That should be enough to get them to down to a 7:39.

The CTR already has an aluminum hood.

Let’s not forgot that car is equipped with Öhlins. If Renault and Öhlins did R&D with this kit. The suspension is a real deal. You’re talking about 3 seconds over the course of 20KM /12.5 miles. The Renault had roughly .6-.7 mph faster than the Type R. The Öhlins suspension set up will allow the car to put power to the ground with traction. This will allow the car to exit the corner at a much greater speed vs a car with unnamed stock suspension.

Let’s not forget other variables. Weather/track temp/wind directions. IMO 3 seconds is not a lot of time consider what Renault had to do to beat the Type R. Plus this car won’t be attainable by the average consumer. It’s basically production vs non production.

The Type R wasnt exactly a full production car when it ran the Nurburg Ring either.

I think Honda's pretty credible when they say it was representative of production specs. You are staking your corporate reputation on these record attempts, and if there is any possible performance advantage they secretly had and kept it secret, it would be a huge risk to their credibility and for no real gain. Notice, for example, they were up front in that the record attempt used Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. If the car wasn't fast enough, then they were in a position, as development engineers, to actually make the car faster in a legitimate way. That's the purpose of all that work. No need to cheat.

WIth time comes progress, I'm sure Honda has something up their sleeves.
Epic performance by yet another car we can't have in the states.

"To achieve the quicker time, the Megane RS Trophy-R goes on quite a diet to shed 287 pounds (130 kilograms). Renault doesn't yet explain how this weight loss happens, though. The model allegedly has no rear seats and comes standard with a rollcage both for safety on the track and for added stiffness. Plexiglas windows would also save a few pounds."

Damn that's a hell of a diet LOL.
LoL that is getting into not really a realistic kind of DD car.

All records are meant to be broken. Well done Renault

beating the Type R with a race car that is no longer streetable?? that is hardly fair! I guess this is what it comes to nowadays...I'd said this again! other car companies have to rely on race car component to beat our Type R's, then this speaks VOLUME for our Type R!
