So from the beginning the media has been on the Rs ass about the volume knob the "looks" and the front wheel drive.. They finally got their volume knob that no one except review articles and videos really gave to shits about when asked except a handful of moaners. Now they still wont give up on the looks. Every single article and video the reviewer has to take a jab at the looks and front wheel drive. Not because they are bad but because, well, everyone else is so they want too as well to be in the cool crowd.

News flash media the performance, the car being the fastest around what 7 tracks now, the car schooling cars twice its price, the handling being amazing, guess what? Is because of the stuff you bitch about the looks (areo) and the front wheel drive. Take away the stuff you keep bitching about and all the stuff you love goes away too. cant have your cake and eat it too.

I call this the Star Wars prequel effect. Its cool to hate on and bitch about the prequels whether you really care or not. Because well everyone else is doing it too so they can be part of the crowd not because they really care. Same with the Rs looks they just keep dogging it because its become cool to dog it. SHUT UP Already.

IN real life and in two years I have had zero negative comments on the R. And I go to shows and cars and coffee all the time. I get stopped 3 times every time Im out and complimented on the car. I get told how everyone wished they had one. Not once has anyone ever said god thats ugly. Only people I ever heard bitch about the looks or front wheel drive is the media. so media.. shut up already and just form your own opinions not go with whats cool to bitch about.

Honda thank you so much for the volume knob. Not because it was really necessary but because I was about tired of hearing about the thing.

Who cares what anyone says media or regular? I love the way the car looks. Some of those looks are purpose built. I love the way the car performs, front wheel drive and all. I got the radio knob, but would have bought without one. Who really listens to the radio that much? I would rather listen to the exhaust note. Screw the car media types. I can't wait for those random 40's-50's y.o. women!! Don't think the wife will appreciate it, but...

If you think back to the amount of cars that at the time of release were considered over the top or ridiculous looking and nowadays are classics I dont care too much about comments on the aesthetics. I remember people being up in arms about the mkiv supra being boy racer and by today's standards it looks pretty normal albeit very 90sish.

I hear a lot about the fake vents but they're on a vast majority of cars.. take for example the rear end of everyone's beloved lfa. That being said I love the front of the R and am not a huge fan of the rear, but does it match the personality of the car? Absolutely. All I really care about is how it drives and makes you feel.

At the end of the day the thing I love most about the car is that it's both emotional and polarizing; it incites a feeling in everyone who sees it for better or for worse. If you think about it there are genuinely very few cars you can say that about past or present

regular people like the looks of the car more than car people do. it's that simple. I get compliments all the time by random women in their 40s and 50s

Car companies: we’ll play on the safe side and stay conservative.
Journalists: boring.
Car companies: we’ll go with something radical and stands out.
Journalists: ugly.

People still are willing to travel hundreds of miles and pay thousands over the MSRP. So who cares!

One part I don't understand in the "outrage" is that for example the WRX Sedan doesn't look all that different, similar honeycomb black grills in bumper, big wing, angular lights... it kind of looks how I would expect for a Japanese Brand "hot hatch/sedan" in the current design world. As I have said elsewhere, not sure its beautiful as such but it looks inline with expectations and fine for what it is. I think it looks good in the flesh, perhaps we over analyze the photos but when you see it in the world you take it all in.

No idea why they harp on it either, chances are they drive off on home in something I wouldn't be caught dead in but they enjoy. Oh well. I'm considering that Phoenix Yellow if it materializes - fux the haters lol!

I agree this car, and really many others, look a lot better in person.

I had my new R at a car gathering and people were swarming around it. They loved the look and were really interested in the car. I love the look!

Yes and no. The design is very similar to the STI design, but it does more. If you take the STI and add vortex generators, ground effects on the front bumper and side skirts, side vents on the front bumper, and side vents behind the front wheel arches, you'll have something very similar to the Type R. The S209 does this actually, they add small ground effects on the front bumper and side skirts, add canards to the front bumper, vents behind the front wheels, and vents behind the rear wheels. Despite this, I feel like the Type R still does more than the S209, but only by a hair since the STI's ground effects aren't as substantial and there is no red striping (though I have to admit, it looks cool).

The craziness in the styling that Honda has given us is kind of a love hate thing though. Everything is functional, so you can't call it rice and you can't entirely hate it because of it, but it's still an area of comment. I personally do feel like the design of the Type R is a little over the top, but I don't mind it (but also don't love it), but I most definitely do respect it for what it is and all the engineering that was put behind it.

Styling is subjective and yeah, the general public for the most part would probably think it looks cool. That's because in their head a massive spoiler = fast (not that the R is slow), and all the vents around it with bright red calipers all basically indicate the car is fast, so to them it's cool. Car people on the other hand, look at things differently because they actually know something about cars versus your average joe.

Personally, I do not like the R's styling and think it's just way too over the top. someone above me said car journalists say conservatively styled cars are boring and say out of the box type cars are ugly as well, and that's not necessarily true. There are a lot of cars out there that are stylish. sleek, and more elegantly styled versus the R that i've seen car journalists love. Including stuff like Audis, Focus RS, Alfa Giulia, Mustang, Corvette, etc. Point is, most car people I personally know are not fans of the R's looks, and that reflects on the car journalist videos too. The journalists don't get anything out of bashing the R's looks, in fact it hurts them more than anything. That's just the popular opinion.

But at the same time I don't think hating on people who like how the CTR looks is good, people are different and it's good to see a car that stands out from the crowd once in a while :).

My thing is im tired of the negative comments about looks. They want it to look different but.. the things that give it the performance they love are also the same things that give it the look. They take the looks away they take the areo away they loose track records. But all that back and forth aside, its not just the comments on looks but, the way they are so insulting about it. Professional reviewers calling anyone who likes it an adolescent boy, or you would have to be blind to like it. They cant simply say the design is subjective but has a point. No they are always insulting.

Fake vents blah blah..so what 90 percent of sports cars have fake vents and so on. Just about everything they bitch about on the R they dont say shit about or even love on other cars. Its just hate.

Most of the reviewers hate fake vents in general (regardless of what car it is). They give performance cars more flack about it though. I feel like a lot of reviewers don't tend to like cars with the complex design (whether functional or not). If I'm not mistaken, the McLaren Senna is considered "ugly" as well. I personally feel the same way about the aesthetics of that as I do about the Type R (minus the fake vents, I personally would rather those not be there :p). But the opinion of mine is the same, it's not the best looking, but it does something so it does require respect for that.

My question I'd like to ask all the reviewers is: Disregarding the fake vents, without removing that portion of the vehicles actual function, how would you change the vehicle to look better while maintaining the aerodynamic function of the part? In other words, you can't just delete the side vents in front of the doors since they serve a function with the hood scoop and the front bumper side vents.
