To address the thread topic, Scotty Kilmer is a luddite and hates new things. He hates turbos and only loves naturally aspirated 1.8L Toyota engines. He also calls his 94 Celica a sports car.

Scotty's advice aims to minimize costs. So his advice is to buy a used, reliable car, and keep it for a very long time. That's the best way to minimize the overall cost of car ownership. He says don't buy a new car because it depreciates fast; and pay cash for the car, because credit has additional costs. And before you buy the used car, have it tested by a trusted mechanic.

He is right that the 2.0 engine is less complicated and more proven over the years, so it will probably last longer on the average. Also the Honda manual transmission will probably last longer than the Honda CVT and it will cost less to repair. And the fewer electronic gadgets you have, the fewer points of failure you have, so you will spend less for repairs over the years.

I don't see anything controversial here, it's just common sense. Sure, your goals might be different, but if your main goal is to minimize costs, then what Scotty says is good advice.

/\ Good points and glad Honda offers the options, 2.0 or 1.5t.

2.0 is proven and has i-vtec if your still into "vtec just kicked in yo!". Also don't have to worry about Direct Injection issues.

1.5t a lot funner but direct injected. Would of been better to have the 2.0t Accord engine in the Si.

And uh, what engine should they have put in the Type R?
Not sure if you missed it, 2.0t Accord engine.

If you go back to the last 8th & 9th Gen Civic, there model lineup consisted of LX-EX 1.8 and Si models with a 2.0/2.4 engine. Just saying, would of been nice for the 10th gen Si to be more unique than just having different internals/turbo & LSD. Or at least kept that boy racer i-vtec "vtec just kick in yo"!

But hey, Honda is making money on CTR's for those who prefer the CTR over the Si. I'd skip getting the Si and just get the CTR. But anyway, Scotty has been giving good tips.

He never liked turbo and GDI engines, and he hates CVTs All he cares is an engine that lasts 50 years and no matter how boring that car would be,

Not sure why we have all these pages of responses. This old fart Scotty is all about simplicity and reliability. And that's fine. That's his big thing.

In that context he's probably right. The 2.0 non-turbo most likely will outlast the 1.5 turbo. But... I would rather enjoy my torquey, potent turbo than the more mundane 2.0 any day of the week. I'm not keeping the car for 100,000+ miles anyway but I also have faith that Honda builds great engines.

A lot of people seem to watch a few Kilmer rants and think he's an old redneck fart who lives in a ratpack garage somewhere in Texas lol.
He's got a Masters degree (and obviously has a Bachelors as well) from the University of Illinois (I think) - no small achievement-
He's a creative, cultured, shrewd, energetic, one-of-a-kind man with many skills and a strong opinion against overcomplicated junk.
He's a mage.
He also served his country iirc and rides a cool Triumph streetbike.
A very cool guy.

Obviously he's triggered a lot of people with his opinions, take a look at how badly Tavarish criticized him on Jalopnik, tsk tsk. People who don't like are free to not watch his videos.

I'm still waiting for the 1.5T horror stories and fuel dilution reports to turn into stories of 1.5T's seizing up on the highway and leaving someone stranded, or a blown CVT on the CivicX, etc.... I've heard no great reports so far other than the rare limp mode encounters.

Lol I remember when Honda announced the recall a bunch of haters here slammed Honda. Guess what, no one cares, these cars are all over the place here in Canada. Can't turn your head in Toronto or Vancouver without catching sight of a magnificent Civicx 1.5T lol. :D And I have yet to see one on the side of the road, disabled, blinkers flashing, with sad passenger inside.

Have to understand his target audience is mostly non-enthusiasts trying to spend as little money as possible on their cars.
Mainly talking towards those who are new to cars or don't really care for them too much.

He does mention turbo charged and exotic cars are fun.

He also show'd love to Honda.
