I recently switched from an iPhone to an Android One phone and am looking for advice on how to speed up my car recognizing the phone when it's plugged into the USB dock.

Right now I have to:
  1. Make sure the screen is on the home menu.
  2. Load Android Auto from the phone.
  3. Go into the Android system menu and change the "Use USB for" option from "No Data Transfer" to "USB Tethering"
  4. Android Auto appears in the home menu.
  5. Tap on the Android Auto icon.
With iPhone's CarPlay 99% of that was handled just by connecting the phone to the car; is there a process or an app I can use that will replicate this experience? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Using my OP 5T and S10+, once I connect it to the USB port/cable, it loads the AA home screen every time.

Sounds like your phone is the issue, assuming all your HU settings are right. I just plug my S8 in and it loads automatically after the first time pairing. When I shut the car off while using AA, next time I start up it even remains loaded waiting for a phone to be connected.

For future reference, there's an app called Tasker that can do a huge amount of automation, including everything you described. I use it to turn Bluetooth on whenever I plug the USB cable in, which allows Android Auto to connect more quickly. I have a couple other rules to turn it off automatically when it's not in car mode anymore. If you're interested in becoming more of an android power user, I highly recommend you check it out.
