*hint: Not me.

from a 60 mph roll in 3rd, and it was almost like i was sitting still.

conclusion: ive never been very familiar with subarus, but the sti is apparently quick as fuck.

im surprised those cars arent more popular. i guess its the price tag.

anyone here go from a sti to an si? i cant even imagine how much of a downgrade that would feel like (power/speed wise). what other feedback or opinions or experience do you have with these cars?

I had a ā€˜16 WRX. Gave it up for family reasons. I genuinely love my Si, but honestly, the power difference is laughable. Numbers and ā€œcar scienceā€ aside, the WRX felt worlds faster. But again, I am very happy with my Si. Itā€™s a steal for the price. I think.

I miss the AWD of a Subaru, it can come in quite handy. The STi starts out with an extra 100 HP and tuning, if done properly, wonā€™t ed up in a ringland failure. Thereā€™s a million WRXs out there with their starting 268 HP. Keep to equal length headers and the FA20 will hold up to some decent power itself. I donā€™t think the WRX will out handle the Si, but a little work and the handling gets much better. Insurance though, can be a tad outrageous. Entry level WRX is about 26k, i was offered a mid level WRX for 27k, but couldnā€™t live with the clutch and the potentially horrendous mileage.

A newer stock WRX traps high 90's. Faster? Sure, but worlds faster is a stretch unless you had a nice set of mods to go with it.

OP - Stock STI's only make about 250WHP and trap low 100's. If it freight trained your ass, it was modded.

I used to own a 2010 STI. Catless DP, intake, and an OTS tune from Cobb. It was definitely a fast car.

That compared to a stock SI there is absolutely no comparison, you're going to get spanked. My si right now has a hondata +6 psi tune and it feels about as quick as my STI when it was stock.

I have a video on my phone of a fellow si owner on here with an intake and a custom tune pulling busses on a stock STI from a 40 roll. So take from that what you will. I'm sure a stage 2 sti vs a FBO si would be a close matchup but of course don't even try from a dig. A 40 roll would be interesting. I will say that the STI falls on its face hard at highway speeds.

In terms of handling:
I was running through some tight sharp corners chasing a 2017 sti and he couldn't shake me for the life of him. I was right there the whole time. My personal take on the handling characteristics of both cars are as follows:

STI - you can throw that car into a corner at any speed and it just flops around (lots of body roll) but it will always make it through the corner. The corner exit speed was pretty incredible on my stage 2 sti. Loads of torque and you could go wot halfway through the turn and it'll pull itself around. It handles great but it doesn't feel very precise. It handled great but not the way you'd expect it to.

Si - definitely impressed me when I first pushed it. It feels much more confidence inspiring - less body roll, sharper steering, etc. But doesn't have the exit speed of the STI. It feels much more precise and predictable.

My STI ownership history was great but stressful. The car was fun, made all the right sounds, tons of aftermarket, awd, always respected everywhere you went, great community, subie wave, practical being it was a hatch.

Now the bad side of it... parts aren't cheap at all. $800 for a power steering pump, $800 for a rebuilt steering rack, quoted $8000 labour for a motor rebuild, heavy, HORRENDOUS fuel mileage, stressful to own because sooo many motors fail on those cars.

I made it to 260,000 km on the stock motor which is an absolute unicorn if you know anything about Subaru. Sometimes I miss that car but honestly with a few mods to the si I am more than happy. The si is reliable, incredible fuel mileage, practical, great aftermarket, and the potential is there for these cars. It won't be long until the Subaru guys will be afraid to mess with modified 10th gens. Hope this helps lol

Nothing to be ashamed of...the STI way out powers the Si. I think Stock they are like 268 hp, has a bigger engine etc. They are built for performance. They also have a bigger price tag. If I was buying a car to win races, it would be a CTR. I have never driven in an STI, but I have driven in a WRX, and the Si is imo more practical and more comfortable

Now if you told me you were spanked by a Camry with a bolt on wing, I would be very disappointed in you :)

I have a stock 17 STI. It is faster in almost everything you can imagine. And sounds better. It does feel cheaper and not as fun to drive to my 17 SI

Autobytel's 0-60 test of a stock 2016 STI ...

First run with TC on sucked but check out the other ones with it off. 4.5 seconds 0-60 is genuinely fast. Imagine if it was tuned.

But in my opinion, the Si is a better car overall, especially considering price. Sure, the STI has AWD and a lot more power but it also costs 12 grand more.

The Si rides and handles smoother and has very good balance with good (not great) acceleration. For the money, Si wins. In a drag race, STI wins.

Never owned one but driven one several times. If you're willing to rev it and dump the clutch from a stop, they come off the line like they're trying to rip your fillings out. Pretty good acceleration if you're at the right RPM range once rolling but laggy dogs if you're geared too high. You can
damn near watch the fuel gauge needle drop from WOT pulls. This was in a '04... so the new ones might be better, but I thought they're still around 300 HP at that time. Very close ratio with a narrow power band make you feel like you're got to drive it hard and shift constantly or you're in the wrong gear. The WRXs I've driven.... some from the same era, one quite a bit newer ('14 I think) felt less peaky due to less power up top, but stronger in the mid-range comparatively. They just felt better day to day. My friend had bought the '04 STI and I really got to wring it out. It was a neat car... but I'd never own one and given the Imprezas were pretty economy car-esk at the time, their price point seemed crazy. They've all gotten much better over the years. My same-era RSXs were much nicer cars... not to mention any of my Z's.

Given you went after a car costing CTR money with similar power, though AWD is a hinderance and not a help once you're rolling and have traction for straight line acceleration due to more drivetrain losses... the outcome is still no surprise. Mods could be an equalizer but if the STI is modded... it's got a larger turbo and engine displacement so it'll have both more to start with and more room to grow. It's just not surprising at all. The car with 300 hp will walk away from the car with 200 hp so long as the weight doesn't negate the extra power.

I'd personally own a WRX and have been close to pulling the trigger on them once... and have had them near the top of the list a couple other times but never did go for one. Even with their flaws, and all cars have them, I think I'm missing out having not had a WRX.

STIs are great and all but they suffer the same issues I have with a CTR in general: it's a lot of money for what, platform-wise, started out at a price point ~2/3 less and the overall quality of the car didn't improve with the price point. A ~35k CTR is still [just] a Civic and a ~35k STI (was) still an Impreza. Can you throw a little money in a WRX or Si and close the gap? Yep. Can you match them? Sure... but they won't have the suspension or brakes amongst other things to really perform as well, but if we're just talking about spirited driving on the road, they'll get the job done. I'm not saying a STI or CTR aren't possibly worth the extra money to some over WRXs and Sis... just not to me.

i have thought long about this and ive come to the conclusion that if i had the money id get the sti over the ctr. the ctr is to fucking ugly.

i wish honda would release the ctr engine in the coupe id buy that in a heart beat even if i couldnt afford it.
