I'm actually curious to find out why you are selling the golf R for the Type R. I had the golf in mind when i settled on the CTR. What are your thoughts?

In addition to the ever increasing reviews. Positive word of mouth and real life encounters seem to be keeping the CTR market strong. Nearly 10k miles on the odo, the appearance and performance still blows me away. Its unreal, I am obsessed with this car.

After the corvette world for a few years I went with a '17 Golf R 6sp then the '18 Golf R DSG at the time I probably would have went with an '18 type r if the prices had not been so inflated by the dealers. I have nothing but, praise for the Golf R, a really fantastic car but, it's on the other end far as looks go, not the best looking car I've ever had but, it's not horrible but, unless you are a car person it just looks like a Golf. And honestly I trade a lot I'm up to around car count about 35 I think. I get bored and just like to drive different cars for shorter periods of time. Plus I'm old lol, maybe partly mid life crisis now days. I've traded 2 cars and 2 motorcycles in the last 3 months. Found a fantastic deal on a new Type R today but, the dealer must think I'm an idiot for what they offered me for trade on my Golf R. I'm in no hurry so, I'll just wait out the dealer or wait till I sell it. Thought it was sold last week but, the guy never showed up or let me know why he didn't come, always going to have that I guess.

Ahh ok, that was one of the reasons why i didn't pick the Golf, they were just everywhere and they all looked the same. Also the whole #dieselgate thing happened so I left the golf out.

I heavily considered both cars for the longest time. The Golf R was always #1 on my list, and the CTR was #3. Second place went to the STi. I preferred a hatchback in either case, I wanted AWD, and I really didn’t like the Civic’s styling.

By the end of the day, a CTR ended up in my garage, and I don’t regret it one bit. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It puts the biggest shit eating smile on my face, as humanly possible. The styling is a bit much, but the functionality, practicality, absolutely perfect driving dynamics and sheer fun far outweigh a silly looking yet functional spoiler, or a cheesy fake carbon body kit.

My number one reason I was leaning towards the golf R was because it was a hatchback and it looked adult like. But it was so much more pedestrian to drive compared to the CTR. The 6MT and clutch in the Golf R I drove felt completely anemic. And turns out I don’t really need AWD after all. Plus dat VW reliability

As for interiors, I thought I always preferred the R interior over the CTR interior. Turns out after actually spending time in them, I much preferred the Civic. The R was just bland.

Yeah the car looks outrageous. But it can walk the walk. And it’s simply awesome.

Yeah same, STI was on my list however after thinking about it, its a 15+ old engine and paying the same price for a brand new car didn't add up. My mate's gf at the time also had one and also said its nothing special.

Was gunning for the ford RS until two dealerships at the time told me there is a one year waiting list as there was none, and saw a few vids of the CTR beating both the STI and RS in a rolling race so thought this car must be something even without AWD, cheaper to buy and fix.

I’m juvenile and as soon as saw what the Type R looked like in prototype form I said “oh my god I gotta have one”.

Now, the Golf R was on my list, but the styling was too meh for me and the performance didn’t really wow me. That interior though, and the infotainment, wow. That is definitely a step up from the Civic IMO.

My family also had garbage luck with VWs in the past so I was a bit biased. :dunno: Regardless, if you do choose to come to the holy grail of FWD, you won’t be disappointed.

The Golf R is a great machine on paper (never driven one) but VW's styling across the board is bland to me. I was heavily considering the STi and the FoRS but the ADM on the RS was even more ridiculous than the CTR around here. I never really considered the CTR until I saw one in person, after that I made it my life's mission to get one. That lasted only a day, the dealership one town over had one in stock and was only asking $2k over MSRP:headbang:

My reasons for ditching the STi was

1. As mentioned, it's super old. Powertrain and drivetrain haven't changed in forever.
2. Horrendous paint quality, even compared to the civic
3. Horrendous fuel economy- I have a few friends with STis and they manage 250-350km on 65L of premium fuel in the winter. That's brutal.
4. No hatchback!!

I'm pretty excited! a little worried about pot holes and those rims, pot holes always seem to find me.

pot holes suck...but as long as you keep your eyes peeled for them you should be good. or you could just swap the tires. Congrats on the R, you won't regret it.

Hey Mjonesjr8, I’ve had three generations of Golf R models (R32, mk6 6mt and mk7 DSG). The 17 DSG replaced my mk6 that was flooded during hurricane Harvey. We still have the mk7 DSG. It is a super quick and super refined car, no doubt. And styling is conservative. But I knew civic type R was something special and had been keeping track of all the positive owner feedback and press. I saw one in person in a Target parking lot. Much more cool than pictures. It looked aggressive. The styling is purposeful punk rock. I had a chance to get one at sticker and I made the leap. Although the Golf R is a fantastic car, I’ve driven it maybe 3 to 4 times since I brought the civic home last November. I’ve been smiling and enjoying the CTR as my daily driver ever since. Added bonus— the cargo capacity is much better than the Golf— even with a toddler car seat and kids booster seat taking up the back seat. I’ve taken the Type R on road trips and it is an absolute thrill to drive— particularly on roads with high speed limits or lots of curves. My only nag relating to road trips is the smallish gas tank. Like you, I hadn’t owned a Honda for many years. I had a CRX and Prelude in the past. More recently I’d been driving German cars and VW’s in particular. I have to say, the Honda CTR is really a thing to be experienced and admired. It’s the best, most enjoyable, visceral car I’ve owned. Good luck on your journey!
