I bought my Civic EX-T in July 2018. I just scheduled my first oil n filter change online at dealership at 6700 miles and noticed they prompted me for additional work: 2016-18 SOFTWARE UPDATE & A/C CONTROL UNIT PUD.

I did notice my car took forever to heat up on the cold days, but was happy with the heated seats and remote start when I remembered. I entered my VIN on Honda web site for any recalls and was told I did not have any recalls. So what's the deal? Do I need this recall or what? Obviously, Honda has a software glitch with a recall if a VIN # says no, but a service appointment says yes.

If I need the recall, in reading this forum post, I hear they change the oil, but not the filter. So do I still just ask for the oil filter to be changed? Do I ask them not to do the idle relearn on my turbo?

Thanks for the help!

Its not a recall that was done through NHTSA, its a TSB from Honda that affects certain VINs and you have to contact the dealer to find out.

The compressor is faulty, they replaced mine and other forum members condenser for free, look up my past thread

Hey Dicecube,

you're lucky you were able to get yours replaced with your dealer that honour the warranty. I'm having the most difficult time with my 2016 civic lx from Markham Honda, which I purchased less than a year ago, and we only put 1800km on it since our purchase. They're refusing our warranty and quoted us $2647 for the whole replacement of the compressor and condenser. It's outrageous and ridiculous. I mean, the level of unaccountability and disregard they have for their own customers and the utter lack of confidence they have with their own products/services - they can't even stand behind their own products' quality promise. I'm losing trust in HONDA. I'm disputing the whole matter with both the dealer and HONDA Canada right now, and am in touch with consumer affairs and APA to hopefully have them be warned and/or reprimanded for such disgusting business practices.

This whole 3.75 or 4 quarts of oil question, change filter or not, charge for extra oil etc is just a lot of Dealer BS.

I did my car's 1st Oil change this weekend, and did it myself.

Yes, of course I changed the filter as well, not only because the filter had been filtering the oil, and if it had caught anything, it should be changed, but also because the old filter will hold old dirty oil, that will mix in with your nice new oil !!

Having warned the car up, so that the oil was hot ---
I drained out the old oil, till it was no longer dripping and then removed the filter, (and the oil that came out when the filter was removed).
Then I temporarily put the oil drain plug back in and left the car for about an hour.

When I returned after an hour, I removed the drain plug, and quite a significant quantity more dirty oil flowed out. Estimate about 1/4 quart.

Having installed the new filter, and drain plug (with new crush washer), and correctly Torqued both, I refilled the car with new oil, with the car level.

It took EXACTLY 4 Quarts to fill to the top Max line of the dipstick, checking level after running engine, and then letting the oil settle back for 10 minutes.

The point I am making is that if I had not waited that extra Hour for the old oil to fully drain, I would have ended up refilling with 3.75 Quarts.
If I had put the full 4 Quarts in, I would have been overfilled, and if I had not checked the level, the next time I did, I would have found it above the Max line, and possibly thought I had significant OD !!

Granted, your average garage or Dealer is NOT going to wait that extra Hour to fully drain the oil (Time is money) .. so when they refill with a full 4 quarts, its going to be overfilled... especially if they do not change the filter. !!

Bottom line .. If you want to be sure a job is done correctly -- DO IT YOURSELF.

I think Honda did an excellent job on this recall campaign.

I think what Honda Canada says vindicates the strong opinions of posters like Snoopsys

As for the Honda dissers who said Honda'd do nothing or dissed the engine, they can go eat poop

On a side note, here in Canada, the car does take a while for its thermostat to get to "warm range" even when it's only -8 degrees celsius outside and the engine is cold. I am expecting after this recall fix that the thermostat will go up faster

You might not say that if you were me. 2016 Honda Civic Touring, Turbo, purchased 3/2016. Mileage: 12,000. Repeated a.c. issues and repairs. Car at dealership right now, they can't figure out what's wrong although they witness the a.c. failing right before their eyes. Due to a health condition from breast cancer treatments heat will cause a health condition that will cost me thousands of dollars to treat. I need ac or the car is not useable. Dealership, so far, has been exceptional but my dealings with Honda Corp. were completely useless and frustrating. I fear I will lose a lot of money on this car, money I need for post-cancer treatments and care, plus I won't be able to drive this car to my appointments, some of which are an hour away from my home. Still think I should eat poop? Your comments were so inconsiderate I wonder if you're even a human.
