I experienced one 5th to 4th lockout and never again. It happened when I was shifting sloppily like I do with my ITR tranny. Since then, I make a conscious effort to clean up the shifts and it never locked me out.
Imagine a gated shifter. Lockout happens when going from 5th to 4th but the shifter ends up between 4th and 6th. That feels like a lock out. Just let off the sifter center and pull it down to 4th.
Try it. Park the car and shut off the engine. Step on the clutch and shift to 5th. Still stepping on the clutch, look for that spot between 4th and 6th that feels like a lockout.
Hope that helps.
