I was just checking out these Achilles ATR Sport as cheap tires that might have some decent performance for the money on the cheap. Has anyone bought these and used them yet. Or even on another sporty car they have owned? I can get 4 with free shipping from Simple Tire in 245/30r20 for $250.68.

Probably fine as passenger touring tires for daily commute / grocery errands. But not ideal for spirited driving or track use. I’d bump up to 255/35 to protect those pricey rims.

It is very stupid to cheap out on Type R tires. It's bad enough with quality all-seasons.
Very true. Why even buy a Civic “R” version if you going to cheapen out on something as important as tires. I don’t even think the “Si” group does such a thing.

Understand your desire to save money, but I believe all the responses to you are spot on. You’ll reduce performance and put yourself, your great car, and others at risk with the possibility of a shitty tire blowing out. Hope you’re able to spring for a decent set.

R888R on a 1993 Grand Prix can make it feel like a Formula car... Tires make or break a vehicle even as a daily. Please don't do this to a Type R...

Putting low quality tires on a Type R, or any high horsepower car, will result in dangerous handling, as it will not handle remotely the same as with quality tires like Michelin PS4S' or Continental SC6's - regular Civic by all means, Type R no.
  • Performance tires are expensive for a reason - you're paying for the highly researched chemistry of the tread and sidewall rubber compounds
    • For example, SC6's are designed to be extremely sticky at operating temperature, allowing for insane grip when cornering, which is why you're supposed to continue turning into the turn when cornering, even though your first instinct may be to pull out of the turn to avoid losing control (these were engineered to gain more traction by continuing to turn into the turn); the downside to this is the tires are only rated for 10K miles, versus the 30K of PS4S', and because they're so sticky, they consistently fling pebbles in between the brake shields.

  • Expect to pay $250+/tire for quality performance tires
A similar point exists regarding the correct type of tire for the climate:
(all of this information is available from the manufacturer if folks would check the OEM specs on the OEM's product page for the tire before buying - the limited information retailers offer generally doesn't go into this level of detail)
  • Summer tires should be used during the summer, and while all-season's can be used in lieu of, performance will be degraded
    • Summer tires cannot be used when it's below 40F, and expect low performance below 50F, as the tread will remain rock hard from being unable to get up to operating temperature (this will result in the tire chattering/skipping across the road surface when turning or accelerating quickly when stopped)
    • Using summer tires when it's below 40F can cause stress cracks in the rubber, which is non-warrantable damage from the OEM (OEMs will state this on the tire's product page)

  • All-season tires should be used during winter only if it doesn't snow where someone lives
    • All-season tires should not be used during winter if it snows, as they are not designed for snow and will always have poor handling and a massively long dead stop distance (2x+ the distance of winter tires)
    • Many folks use all-season's in lieu of winter tires due to cost constraints or bad advice and when someone goes from all-season's to winter tires in a climate with snow, it's a literal night and day difference in handling and traction

  • Winter tires should be used during winter if it snows and/or is consistently below 32F (I prefer Bridgestone WS90's, but Michelin X-Ice are phenomenal as well)
    • The tread of winter tires will remain extremely soft until below 0F (tread is soft enough you can literally push your thumb into it)

Expect to pay $175+/tire for quality winter tires

I’ve seen a bunch of super low cost tires on eBay, I had the same question as you, but after reflecting on it I’d say just bump up to 255/35/20 and save your rims and money too, for example a set of pilot sport all season 4 is about $1100 otd at Costco (for me at least) or $1300 otd for the pilot sport 4s. Yes they’re expensive but like everyone has been saying the cheap tires will probably hold air but not much more than that, I don’t really drive crazy with my type r and wanted something cheap but I want to be able to trust my car to do anything I need it to do at any moment. I want to have the ability to put my car and not worry about the only thing that’s keeping me on the road and not end up in a ditch or dead.

do the all season if your climate allows, I don’t think occasionally driving through very light snow or cold temperatures will be an issue there just be careful.
From what I’ve seen on here a lot, a lot of people recommended the pilot sport 4/4s, if you’re weather is nice go with it 255/35/20 is a lot cheaper than 245/30/20 from what I’ve found gives more meat to soften the blows if you have bad roads around.

i came from a standard civic and I will admit that I’m not an expert by any means, the type r is my dream car and I’m sure it’s the same for a lot of people on here too, Costco has good prices discount tire will price match as well.
As this being my first performance car if learned a lot from everyone on here, I haven’t seen anyone put some cheap Chinese brand tires (probably made of solidified Covid-19) on their type r and I don’t think you should be the first, we’d probably not hear back from you ever again

Agreed with all above This car is bad enough with downgrading to the 18's on all seasons. The perfomance does not Match the sticky 20 inch Contis. i could not imagine putting an even shittier tire on this vehicle....

And there is me on some "ultra high performance all seasons" and having absolutely no problems. Think they were 135 bucks each. Riken Raptors. 245/35/20

Saving money doesnt mean you are poor or cant afford the car. You dont need summer performance tires all the time. I swap to winter tires in the winter.

Decent all seasons can work very well for handling and safety assuming you know the and understand the limits.

Why spend more if you dont want to or have to.

I would still question a 60 dollar tire in these sizes.

Man I don't know......there is no comparison. Riken Raptors are ok. I'd look up performance video comparisons.

either way I am not feeling All seasons on this car

All seasons on the stock wheels make the car feel floaty. Can easily feel the difference once you put them on. I went with Falken all season tires and hated how the car felt.

You can try with High performance all seasons on a car. It will never feel like stock setup Conti's....
