Hey team,I took mine into the dealership in Australia and they reckon it's the pulley system the engine uses, they reckon it's new tech which is why they couldn't factor for the sound and get rid of it during production.

Your dealer is as clueless as others.
The wastegate rattle has nothing to do with the pulley system engine uses and this is not new tech. Maybe to Honda it is relatively new but it definitely is't new in the industry... TD04/Td05 Turbos have been used for many years now so no new tech there. They just keep on coming up with excuses so that people just go home.....

I agree that they are useless but to be fair the manager said that if it gets any louder or worse they will replace the part making the noise. I also don't think it's a case of some do it and some don't - I think it's more a situation of some notice it/mention it, and others don't. I've take 5 type R's in Aus for a test drive, borrowed one for a day and asked 3 of my mates with type R's if they noticed the sound and each one of them had the noise .

I was thinking, with the power behind this forum and how many people are complaining about this noise; why don't we approach an aftermarket manufacturer to replace the part
?? I mean they will literally make 25,000 sales ( Or however many FK8"s have been produced). Obviously Honda is too careless about their customers/enthusiasts to do a recall or a fix, so maybe we should do it ourselves..........somehow.

Thoughts/comments/concerns???

I don't think it's an issue, I think it's a symptom of electronic wastegates. Go look at the BMWs, Mercs, or any other car with electronic wastegates. They all have the rattle.

Of course it's an issue. At the very least it is beyond annoying and it takes away from driving experience. As other makes go from what I know: #1. They don't rattle straight out of the factory.
#2. Most if not all have a fix for it.

you guys keep talking about a rattle, but the noise is really not a rattle. it is a metal scraping sound that occurs when you let off the throttle and start coasting. i have been noticing it on mine now that i'm driving with the windows down. it is really not a rattle at all. i have a 2018 with ~5k miles.

Yeah I would classify mine as a grumble as I let off the gas as you mentioned. I think there are actually two noises that are being confused with each other. Some complain of a rattling/jingling which is probably the shaft of the waste gate actuator. The other noise is more grumbly (low in tone) which feels like it's in the diff or something. I have the grumble but not the jingle. Grumbles, rattles, and jingles...oh my!

Go test drive other cars with electronic wastegates and you'll find the same behavior. There is no fix because it's working as it should.

All wastegates will rattle if they aren't actuated by a mechanical actuator. All mechanical actuators have a spring inside keeping tension on the wastegate at all times. This tension is why there's no rattle. Since electronic actuators have no spring and no tension there's a slight rattle.

The fix you're referring to is a known issue with actuator type wastegates failing on BMW N54 motors. This is a separate and totally unrelated issue as they're different types of wastegates.

I suggest driving cars of other manufactures using electronic wastegates so you can see for yourself. I've heard similar noises from 2019 AMG and M cars, even McLarens as well.

My car sounded like someone dropped keys in a blender and that is not an acceptable noise.
The noise however would completely go away after 10-15 minutes of driving, that is when everything would get nice and hot in the wastegate department....

Also, not all Type R's make that noise and it is not a matter of some drivers not hearing it. I had my friend drive my car who is not even a car guy and he heard the noise right away.

Perhaps one explanation is that the quality on those wastegates is not consistent hence some sound worse than others?

Poor design, that is the REAL answer here.

In your case it sounds like an abnormality or a faulty wastegate. What others are referencing is normal behavior and will be found across all makes with electronic wastegates.

Any comments about poor design can be thrown out the window as there's nothing quantifiable to back the claim other than anecdotal commentary.

I had to take mine to the dealer five times. One out of five we found a rock jammed in between the caliper and the backing plate. My car has done all of the sounds. Metal scraping, springy noises, rattling, etc. My noise is absolutely coming from the left front suspension / brake assembly. Fortunately it has been a while since I have had any issues though.

I think I just started noticing this sound yesterday since its been getting warmer lately and i have been driving with the windows down. It actually reminds me a bit of the sound I had when I had my WRX which was a result of a clutch bearing issue. But, definitely different things here since the clutch bearing issue sound went away if I clutch in. In the R, it's some kind of sound that comes on and off based on decelerating and throttling. But, I noticed the sound went away after driving the car a bit. Going to keep an eye out on this when I go out driving again.
