There are instances where the manufacturer may elect certified third party mechanics to diagnose and provide warranty work. Usually in rural areas where dealer radius is limited. You are misinterpreting the information. It says your warranty cannot be voided if you do your own maintenance properly and per the requirements of the manufacturer. See my post above.
My understanding is that they undergo a similar certification process as the dealer mechanics, and are subject to the same rules/stipulations for warranty/payment authorizations.
If it were me, I'd ask for the name of the certified shop nearest you. And then confirm the relationship through Honda Customer Relations before taking the plunge. The reason I’ve been concerned with this subject is I’m in a similar situation as the OP, that’s why I’ve already been studying this (Warranty Work.) I’m looking at buying either a Honda or Subaru and the 2 dealers closest to me is 1 and 2 hours away. I know it’s not the same problem he has but it still involves warranty work. So I contacted the dealer earlier today to ask them directly about this and here’s what their reply was. It isn’t free, but for any major work that might cost a lot, there is an alternative for those of us that live hours away from a dealer. Just to drive to any major town is 25 minutes away for me.

No as part of the warranty program you can go to a certified mechanic and you would just pay a $200 deductible.

I have a question for you. I live 2 hours from the twin cities. What would happen if I need my car fixed under warranty work. Would I need to get my car to a Honda dealer to get it fixed?

He could just as easily be talking about an extended warranty program.
