When my car was shipped, it had a full tank of gas in it. My salesman told me he was going to put in the good stuff. It was delivered from NY to CA in record time, shipped out Monday and got here Wednesday. I was surprised as hell it got here that fast. My salesman took care of shipping and all applicable taxes & fees. All documents was FedEx back and forth. Only thing that kinda sucked was getting all forms notarized. When the car got here, I had to get DMV to inspect it and do a smog check. Relatively painless after the notary was completed.

thanks for sharing and glad it worked out for you
i was looking into to this last year as well but shipping overland and ocean to hawaii was not worth $1-1.5K i would potentially save.
i have done this before with other cars but now don't have the time to take off work to deal with the registering the car :banghead:

Seems like a big hassle. How much over MSRP are those Cali dealers charging that all that stress was worth it!?!?

I have done remote (out-of-state) purchases many times when the car in question was somewhat unique (demo, used or rare), and have been satisfied with them. Not having to listen to inevirtable bunghole F&I guy for hours on end is worth some additional hassle. For me, paperwork has never been any worse than those involved in local transactions. I haven’t done the transportation with an auto shipper, but I wouldn’t hesitate to do it if the dealer is too far to drive back from.

Congrats!

Seattle and Portland dealers started to say yes at $38K but I never actually got far enough to know if they would even honor that. There just weren't that many cars available up here.

So MSRP + shipping was a wash, and I felt better about paying a shipper than I would have paying markup.

I much prefer to pay shipping. There is no tax on shipping. Paying ADM will accrue sales tax and (I suspect) carry over to the yearly registration fee.

I am surprised you needed to do a DMV inspection. I haven't been notified I need an inspection. I also have Pennsylvania inspection stickers on the car. Also, no notary needed, although I signed paper work that indicated a notary was supposed to provide a stamp. I won't worry about any of this unless I get a letter from CA DMV.

This is true. Paying ADM will increase your DMV fees. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

It was $1500. Much better than the price of a plane ticket and time to drive back.
That's awesome. Thanks for sharing the info with us poor fools in California.

If you play the game and waste hours of time trying to bring the price down, 3k over at best. Couple of places agree to 5k over pretty quick. Majority start the conversation asking for 10k over. Worst quote I got was 13k over. Majority of those are bone stock, no "options", just paying money for nothing. Every phone call and in person meeting leaves you feeling like you want to wash out the stupid with drain cleaner.

If I had to do it again right now I would go straight to out of state, no second thoughts.

Good pictures! Maybe OP can see the damage he mentioned to the front bumper by the licence plate area. Looks like it was already damaged before they tried to put on the plates?

you'll get a range from $5k - 10k over MSRP. I had a lead with one of my friends in Houston that was in the waitlist for a MSRP dealer. Couldnt come soon enough though and i was forced to buy local. Luckily I got something for the extra $2500 I paid. I ultimately would have saved maybe $1k if I had waited after you include shipping costs.

I am not sure what the image has--looks like maybe tape or something. The damage is in the same place and perhaps when that strip was removed it caused the damage. The damage is a tiny gouge through the paint.
Oh well, it won't show.

I decided to buy my car from out of state, since I could not find a car in California that did not have ADM or extras. I was fortunate to find a CTR in Pennsylvania and have it shipped to me. Here was my overall experience.

The Good:
  • Sonic Grey at MSRP!
  • The dealership did not introduce any surprises that affected the final price
  • All the paperwork could be done using FedEx Overnight
  • I financed, and my credit union was more than happy to work with an out of state dealership
  • The dealership handled all the taxes, fees, licensing, etc. for my city and state
  • Shipping was easy to set up; I did it all through Googling for a shipper and then scheduled and paid online
  • Shipping was in an enclosed trailer, with full insurance
  • The shipping was estimated to be 7 to 9 days, and the truck arrived in 5 days!
  • The car arrived 99.9% perfect
The Not so Good:
  • The 0.1% less than perfect condition is a paint scratch or chip under the front license plate frame. (Yes, I got that installed--easier than trying to explaining to the The Man how it ruins the lines.) The paint blemish looks like it happened when the license plate frame was installed. The plate will cover the blemish, so I will touch it up when I get some touch up paint.
  • I needed to have the Buyer's Order sent out twice from the dealership. The first time it was not completely filled in. The second Order sent to me was better, but still not completed properly. My credit union was OK with me writing in the missing details.
  • Did not get my full tank of gas--it was half empty :(
  • Dealership did not seem to have much experience with this type of transaction. They did not respond to my emails quickly, averaging 8 hours to respond, with a max of over 20 hours. Needless to say, since they had my payment and I needed to schedule the shipment, I was fuming a bit.
  • My original salesman resigned the same day I made the deal, and the transition to another sales person did not go smoothly.
  • I needed to send drivers licenses and insurance info several times. I am not too sure what that was all about.
  • The dealership should have turned my business over to the finance department to finalize the deal. Instead, the sales person and sales manager were handling this part. I think that is what caused the issues with paperwork and communication. It took a week and a half before all the paperwork was finalized.

Over all, I would do this again knowing what I know. I would set an agreement with the dealership how often I wanted to be updated on the status of the transaction. Also, take note that the price for shipping can change day to day. Shipping companies are like airlines, where the price goes up or down depending on demand. Good luck to anyone considering this option!
Did you do the CA registration part by yourself or have a broker to do it (for a fee of course). Since AAA doesnt handle this type of transaction, i googled and found a broker that would do this for a fee. I did this with my last car that i bought from out of state. Plus I also needed to smog the car even it was brand new and 50-states legal. it was some law and smog actually required the techs to plug the car into the computer for verification.

The dealer will fill out of the paperwork for CA DMV, including registration. There will be Limited Powers of Attorney you sign allowing them to file for you. There should be no need to walk into DMV or use a broker. PA even has a temporary paper license plate similar to the ones we need in CA for our freshly purchased cars.

How long ago did you buy out of state and need to get the smog check? I haven't received a notice that I must do the smog check. The car was officially smogged in PA, although I wouldn't be surprised if CA insists I get a baseline into their system.

On a side note, I wonder whatever happened to that CA bill that proposed we end smog checks on new cars since it is essentially a big waste of $$$.
