I've had a honda vehicle in my driveway since 1984, needless to say I've owned several honda cars. Today I've decided to never buy another because of the dealer, the other dealers are too far away even this one is a 2.5 hour drive from here. My car is at the dealer for multiple problems they told me that i had so many codes that they had some trouble to diagnose ( it's a 2016 civic touring).
The problem that pissed me off is that the motor in the driver's seat is not working well and making a lot of noise. I called the dealer before the warranty was over, told them about it and asked for them to put it in the system so that it will be covered, they said ok. I work all week and can't make it to the dealer often. I also have the 4 year extended warranty on the car. I brought it in for the recall and told them to check the seat which they never did. Today it was towed for the second time in a month, and I told them to check the seat again. They told me the motor of the seat has to be replaced and you have to change the whole seat because it's not sold seperately. The cost to me was $1400.00 because the warranty was over, I explained to them that I had called them during the warranty period and they told me that that doesn't count because they have to diagnose it themselves, so why did they not tell me that when I called, they had no answer, also why does the extended warranty I took doesn't cover it. It seems the extended warranty is totally useless. They actually told me that the extended warranty is covering the work that is being done on it now, they are changing the injectors and other stuff in the engine but that to me is powertrain stuff and is covered 5 years with the original warranty.
I contacted the honda main office to complain, they opened a file and e-mailed me asking me to send them the diagnosis from the dealer, the dealer doesn't want to give me the diagnosis paper, they said that they have to send it themselves. I e-mailed honda canada back and explained to them that I can't get the diagnosis, now I'm waiting to see what happens.

Just do the best you can and I'm sure everything will work out. Aside from the driver's seat motor were you experiencing any other problems or did the dealer identify the problems?

Just in case you aren’t aware of this, but warranty work does not have to be done at the dealer. Any auto repair shop can do warranty work. Just make sure you save all paperwork related to the warranty work in case you’ll have to contact Honda later.

This is not true. Warranty work needs to be done by an authorized Honda dealership. If not, Honda would be inundated by bogus claims. At the simplest level, how would Honda ensure oem parts were used and ultimately, the quality of the repair. It would also be a huge disadvantage to its independently owned network of dealerships. Warranty work is a massive revenue stream.

Maintenance does not have to be performed by a dealer but if you choose this route, ensure you keep a thorough record of the work done, and make sure you follow the factory recommendations. The reason for this is in case you run into an issue while under warranty that could be deemed due to a lack of maintenance, you can prove that you did all you could per Honda guidelines. This is why many, while under warranty at the least, service their car at the dealer as it creates a solid record of the vehicle history.

Really tough situation as it’s ultimately your word against the dealer why the seat was not diagnosed and repaired while still under warranty. Provide an honest detailed account of your situation to Honda to help them make a decision.

Lastly, stay calm and respectful because the warranty parameters are clear, documented and........ over. You are hoping they will do you a solid.

Best of luck, hope it works out for you.

Sorry you are wrong. Honda will not pay the repair shop.

Where do you read that ?

I don't know why I bought a 4 year extended warranty if it covers certain things, that was not explained to me, I thought my car was fully covered. Also, before going to the dealer my wife said she doesn't want the car anymore because of having to get it towed twice in a month, she has been using my truck and loves it now to my detriment. So I was talking to the salesman to trade the car for an suv, they gave me a price for the trade in, I also went to toyota because their new 2019 rav4 hybrid interest me and they are giving me $2500 more for my civic than honda is. Not sure what I will do, we are giving the car to my daughter next year so if we trade it in we will have to give the new suv to my daughter and buy another.

That was the first time I bought extended warranty and never again. Glad you car is doing great mine was in the shop a few times for different things that's why I decided to buy the extended warranty. Amazing your brakes are still going strong my rotors were warped at 30k and had to be changed.

Never trust a salesman / dealer. Most of them just want your money

It's not your fault, but you were misinformed when they told you that they could put it in the system without witnessing the problem themselves. In a Volvo that I had, the radio started flaking out and the car was days from running out of warranty. I explained my situation and they said "no, sorry, you have to bring it in before the end of the warranty". So I had to take time off from work and go in for them to log the codes being thrown. If I had waited until the weekend, my warranty would have been over.

These situation are frustrating because you took them at their word and all you'll keep hearing is that "you shouldn't have been told that".

Hopefully Honda makes good on this for you.

A next step, before you throw in the towel, would be to insist on a meeting with the Honda zone service representative. Did this back in 87 with a water filled taillight on my wife's Accord, it was at least 2k out of warranty, met with the rep & the service manager, rep took one look at it, turned to the service manager and said to him, just take care of it! Bang-zoom-done, I had been quoted 300+, it was done at no charge. If you previously complained about your seat within the warranty period, my guess is the zone rep will act in your favor, just be calm, rational and explain that Honda doesn't really want to loose a customer over something this small & petty. The trick to complaining is to complain to someone who has the authority to solve the problem. Customer satisfaction ratings are very important to Honda, your service manager obviously needs to get with the program. A manufacturer can't buy enough advertising to counteract a verbally dissatisfied customer, especially with social media, a satisfied customer creates priceless positive advertising. Worth a try.
