I'm not too familiar with speaker replacements when it comes to component speakers and tweeters. I do know that the stock speakers need to be replaced, but I don't want to have to get a separate amp.

If I buy component speakers with the tweeter separate, is it a direct replacement, or do I need to install the crossover that the component speakers come with?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Thanks!

Usually when you buy a component set (for example: Alpine type S) they will come with an in-line passive crossover for the tweeters. Keep in mind what the resistance of the factory speakers (I don’t know it, maybe someone else can chime in). If they have the same resistance (aftermarket speakers are usually 4ohms) you should be okay, but replacing the speaker with a “higher” performing one could actually decrease the volume output since they have a higher running power RMS than factory. I would suggest just replacing the tweeters if you’re looking to have “crisper” highs. If you buy standalone tweeters they will also include passive crossovers.

Edit: component speakers that have the external crossovers need them installed. Run the line that hooks to the factory speaker(not tweeter, but shouldn’t matter) and run wires to the woofer and tweeter respectively.

P.S. Alpine components have crossovers for the woofer integrated on the speaker basket. Tweeters have the inline crossover

I am about to purchase JBL GTO 609C component speakers, I love the GTO line sound but the crossover seems huge! Where would you suggest mounting it? I was thinking inside the door with plastic ties. Any suggestions?

It depends on what Audio system you have already in the car.

The Standard one or the Premium one.

The Standard one basically has 4 channels : Front left & Right, Rear left & Right.
If the speakers on any of those 4 channels is to have an additional Tweeter connected, then it will need a crossover.

The Premium system has 10 or 12 Channels and differs from the Standard system, because each of the 4 Tweeters have their own dedicated Channel (amp output) and therefore do not need any crossover unit, as they are not Piggy-backing on a Main Mid Speakers feed amplifier output.

You might want to Update your profile from just "Honda Civic X" to the Model of Civic you actually have, which will help those replying to any specific questions you have about your particular car.

i have the 11 speaker version, without the subwoofer. It’s a european trim so wouldn’t know what it’s called in the US.
1.5 cvt turbo hatchback with the double center exhaust.

Well, it depends n if the Speakers are driven from Amps in the Head Unit, or from at Exrternal Amp, that is typically located in the side of the Passenger footspace.

Does the spec call the Audio system a "Premium" system. I suspect it is, in which case you do not need (and should not fit), additional crossover units.

BTW You are not missing out at all, in not having a Woofer !!!

As the Britts would say "It does Bugger All"

Here are my speakers, i’m guessing i don’t need a xover since there isn’t one on the tweeter.
I managed to soundproof a bit the drive mr side with roadkill, just did a quick job, sounds already better, cannot immagine what new drivers will sound like!

You did a great job. Can you please tell me if these speakers are fitting perfectly in your door or you needed some kind of ring adapter for the speakers. If so from where did you bought it? Thanks!

Ok. I have the same car as you have. Sport Plus 1.5. I got in touch with some guys who are actually specialized in these types of upgrades.
They told me most of the time some adaptions are required based on the fact that, for example the original speaker has one hole for the screw, and on your JBL speaker tou have four of them. So you probably need to find an alternative way to mount them.

Are these the speakers you intend to mount?

Yes i know, i will be cutting out the original speakers and using their adapters, there are videos on youtube that show how it’s done

So i started this “easy” task of replacing the speakers... 3hrs later and only managed to apply sound deadner to the driver door and installing the tweeter.
The speaks i bought are too wide to be installed on the door without an adapter and AFTER i cut iut the original speaker, it’s too tight to mount the speaker flush into it and the speaker sticks out too much to put the door panel back on...FML.
Next thing i’ll try is to cut the side out a bit to see if it will be enough for it to sit flush.
Turns out there is not much space between the original speakers and the door panels

Finally got the speakers mounted, just took off the OEM one, lightly folded in the metal pieces where the bottom of the OEM speaker sat on (the two clips) and just shoved the JBL in there, but four homes in the metal and screwed those suckers in.... THEY SUCK!!!
No bass at all, completely flattened out the sound! I am so disappointed (and pissed, after 5 hours of trial and error)! OEM speakers have much more bass it's unbelievable! At first I thought I inverted the wiring, so i tried reversing them, nothing, no luck. It really baffles me, I knew the GTO line to be the hard thumping line, as I owned GTO's years ago with the carbon fibre cone and they kicked almost as hard as my subwoofer!
The audio level is the same, if not maybe a bit louder than OEMs, but not that much... I really do not know what to do, I'd like to give JBL another chance and maybe try the club 6500s, then again I really don't want to waste more time and having to return those too.
Anyone have any suggestions on some good thumping front speakers??

HI,

I managed to upgrade my system using:

https://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/car-audio-speakers-system-mille-pro-mpk165-3/

So far i replace only the "woofers". See pictures below. After mounting them, without putting the door cover, gave it a try and sounded crappier than the orginal ones. I've experienced the same dissapointment. Then i realised that it sounded bad because it wasn't sealed properly. By using silicones and putting the door cover and the restarm, i finally managed to obtain an improved sound, let's say 25% better.

What remains to be done:

- wiring the crossovers; this will be tricky because our amplifier already includes ones;
- applying soundproofing material, because it will for sure raise "crickets" into our doors;

In conclusion, worth the while for me. It's true that i had much more expectations from this upgrade, but i guess i won't get the deep bass from midrange speakers no matter how much money i will spend on them. Please let me know if i can help you further.

Don't be fooled by the price. Orion Cobalt is some very underrated bang for the buck

Install with some mat, fast rings, and gasket tape for mirror shake. You should try using these in your own install before trying new speakers though
