As I've stated before, you will get better mileage in the Prius. However, the fuel savings are offset by the higher purchase price. I would not be too concerned about the battery. I have a 2004 with 265,xxx miles and the original battery. Even if you needed a battery, many are available from salvage yards for ~$500.00. I've driven the new Prius and it rides nicely and handles much better than the previous generations. I was very unhappy with the interior. It was low rent.
