Does anyone else have an issue with the shift into first gear being a little mushy? It's almost like there is a catch point halfway into first, where it sort of feels like you've shifted into gear, but you're only halfway through the shift.

There are several threads discussing CTR tranny issues on this forum that might include your issue, such as:

https://www.civicx.com/threads/the-infamous-2nd-gear-crunch.12890/
OP's issue is about getting into 1st gear. The 2nd gear crunch is about shifting from 1st to 2nd (or in my case also 3rd to 2nd), but not about getting into 1st gear. The nearly 1200 posts in that thread probably wouldn't do the OP any good to be honest.

____

@OP: in a lot of MT cars, if you're having trouble getting into 1st, it may be easier to shift into reverse, then back into 1st.

Fair enough. I was just trying to point out to the op that tranny issues are often discussed, and you never know know, 1st may have been mentioned. You know how things go off topic in threads.

I don't think this is a transmission problem. It's not like there's any grinding, or the car doesn't want to shift correctly or something. It feels like more of an issue with the shifter itself. I test drove a used CTR before I got mine, and the shifter definitely didn't have this feel. Is it possible that this is something that just needs to break in some more?

I had similar issues getting into first, but more often than not reverse. Either a new shift knob dealt with this or it went away over time. That being said, if you have trouble going into 1st, go into reverse then into 1st (clutch in -> reverse -> 1st -> clutch out and get into gear). If you can't get into reverse, go into 1st then reverse similarly.

There is also the 4th gear lockout/popout that plagues the Type R transmission that is a similar issue (goes halfway into 4th gear then pops back into neutral). There isn't much fix for this one, though it seemed to go away with time for me.

Edit: from what I read when learning to drive a manual, your problem is a common problem that can occur, but amongst all manuals, so not specific to the Type R. A Toyota or Subaru can have similar issues.

Not sure if related, but I noticed if you have electric brake engage, going to the reverse gear (or 1st also I believe) doesn't seem to go all the way. Once disengaged, I noticed it goes into the gear slightly further down (or up in case of 1st gear)

Does this happened every time?
I think this is common for Honda transmissions if not all manual transmissions, but not if it's every time. In my (admittedly limited) experience, it happens about once a day or less.
