In dry weather, you'll get more traction for sure. If I'm not mistaken, if you're trying to expel snow or rain from underneath your tires, you'll have to move those out a further distance (laterally) with wider tires. Granted the tread pattern will also make a bigger difference as well in this regard. Last thing is that thinner tires physically do apply more pressure than wider tires (smaller contact patch with same weight = more pressure).

This is the optimal solution, but unfortunately not everyone can create free time willy nilly like the dealership is asking. If I were the OP, I'd consider asking the dealership to give him until Sunday or Monday so he can take the parts off his car over the weekend when he has time or something along those lines. If he asks for an extension like this and explains why, I'm sure the dealership won't have an issue with it.

That's exactly what I did. As it worked out, they didn't get some crucial piece of paperwork with the car, and told me that they don't expect it until Saturday. I told them that I was "away" this weekend, but could sign the papers on Monday.

I have an appointment to get a Ceramic Pro Gold package + front PPF on Wednesday, so Monday works better anyway (less chance of picking up rocks chips between now and then).

I wish I did something to protect my paint on mine... Paint is really thin on this car :/ Congrats by the way, and glad to hear everything worked out.

Look at konig ampliform which usually run around $800 for the set.

Nice. Are those 18's in the picture? I'm actually really liking the pictures I've seen of 19's with the 30 sidewalls, but I'm wondering if that would grant me any more leeway than the stock 20" with the 30 sidewalls. I'm assuming that two tires with a 30 designation will have equal sidewall protection, but not 100% sure.

The sidewall size is a relation between the width and that 30 designation. So a wheel that is 275/30/X should have a larger sidewall than a wheel that is 245/30/X. As for any gains with a 19" wheel, there is an exact tire size that will match the diameter of the Type R's 245/30/20, it's a 235/45/19 which will produce 0 error in the speedometer and provide exactly ½ inch of additional sidewall. With 18" I believe 245/35/18 is the closest by 0.04%; it's not much.

There is a formula to compute the sidewall length if you know the X and Y in a tire designation X/Y/R. I don't remember it off hand.

I believe those are 18’s. I don’t have those wheels but always liked the picture. I have a set of Gramlight 57cr in 18x9.5 with 265/35 winter tires. I have no issues with running this set up and I live in South Dakota. These wheels ran me around $1500 for the set.

Would be interested in your experience with Ceramic Pro. I have the Silver package and am not super impressed with the gloss and slickness on my white paint vs. another proprietary ceramic coating place I used on my Si. Will probably do Opticoat or Modesto next time.

I don't have experience with the current Continental DWS, but years ago I had several different brand all-seasons on my WRX and the earlier version of ContiExtremeContact performed way beyond the others in snow and ice.

All season Continental DWS06 255/35/20. Within the 1st week of trading in my SI for the Type R, I put those on. I think it was around $1200 after everything was said and done (installation, etc.). They're pretty good but make the car sit a tad bit higher. I've been driving the car daily, through snow and rain and no issues.

I'll be switching to 18s once my wheels arrive and will keep the OEM + all seasons for winter.

235/45/19: 235 is the width in millimeters. 45 is 45% of the width. (Multiply by 0.45). Sidewall height is 105mm or 4.1 inches.
Multiply sidewall height by 2 then add your wheel diameter to get overall tire diameter.

Thinner harder tires will bite and dig into the snow better.
I do agree with the narrower tire. Curious... wouldn't a softer rubber be better in the cold?

Winter/Snow only tires are a very soft compound. That's why using them when it's not cold kills them.

To bring this thread to a close: after a 12 hour marathon on Saturday, we were able to remove all bolt-ons from the SI and return it to factory condition. Monday late afternoon comes, and I'm getting ready to leave to trade in the SI --suddenly, I remembered that I had forgotten to unlock my KTuner V1.2. In a panic, I run upstairs to grab my laptop, only to discover that the laptop battery is dead. I plug it into the wall and start frantically pacing back and forth for 15 minutes, hoping that it will charge enough for me to unlock the KTuner unit. At the 15 minute mark, I snatch the laptop up and sprint down to the garage, frantically trying to get this done in time for my 6 pm appointment. I plug in and load up the KTuner app, only to find that the software is telling me to flash back to stock again before it will enable the unlock option. I spend the next few minutes anxiously watching the progress bar increase one tick mark at a time, doing my best not scream.

FINALLY, the flash ends successfully and I power cycle the car. The KTuner Unlock option becomes available, and I rapidly mash the mouse button to complete the process. JUST IN TIME! It's now 5:40 PM - I can still make it to my appointment if I leave now. I unplug the KTuner, toss everything in the backseat, and try to start the car.

My dash goes off like a Christmas tree and the car refuses to start. Ok, don't panic, let's try again. I hit the button... and nothing. At this point, I'm melting down - did I just brick my car!? How am I going to flash back to stock to fix this if I just unlocked my KTuner and wiped the factory tune from its memory!? Why me!!!???

At this point I go into emergency survival mode. I start shooting inbox messages to multiple people, while frantically searching the forum for the words "KTuner Flash Car Won't Start". I even called the phone number for KTuner and left a (surprisingly calm) message explaining the situation and asking for advice. During the course of my panicked searches, I happened to come across a thread in which a user recommended disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes to power cycle the ECU. I figured that at that point, I had nothing to lose. I pulled the battery connection and started formulating doomsday contingency plans for re-locking the KTuner to the car, flashing a 19.5 PSI basemap, and hoping that the dealer couldn't tell the difference. If that didn't work, my plan was to take the car to a different dealer and own up to what I did. I was assuming that for an outrageous fee, the dealer would be able to use some kind of recovery image to get me working again, at which point I could trade it to the original dealer for my R. Problem was, it was already almost 6 pm, and the dealer had been applying massive pressure to get the Type R off their lot ASAP - in my panic, I was starting to envision them telling me to forget our deal, and that they would sell the car to someone else (a panicked brain is not a logical brain).

After 10 minutes passed, I reconnected the battery, hopped in the car, said a prayer, and tried to fire her up. After several of the slowest, most lethargic cranks ever, the engine caught and sprang to life! I began to burst with insane, maniacal laughter, and immediately threw the car in reverse, hightailing it to the dealer to complete the deal. Surprisingly, someone from KTuner actually rung me back shortly after to help address the issue. He explained that the latest KTuner software doesn't allow you to unlock the KTuner unit without first verifying that the factory software has been flashed successfully. He was very helpful - 10/10 customer service.

This brings to a close my adventures with the SI. It was a stellar platform, and a great introduction into modding. From here on out, we're in R territory!

Welcome to the R club :)

My stress at the dealership was my mind going “oh crap I don’t know how to drive this please let those videos I binged help” on repeat while attempting to conceal my nervousness to my salesman. Yours sounded pretty stressful too!!
