As I've stated before, you will get better mileage in the Prius. However, the fuel savings are offset by the higher purchase price. I would not be too concerned about the battery. I have a 2004 with 265,xxx miles and the original battery. Even if you needed a battery, many are available from salvage yards for ~$500.00. I've driven the new Prius and it rides nicely and handles much better than the previous generations. I was very unhappy with the interior. It was low rent.

Civic with turbo doesn't get 48 MPG. That's so far over the average. It might happen on one tank with tailwind and downslope, but Civic's don't get Prius like MPGs.
I get 48 easily doing the speed limit on a mixed highway. I get about 60mpg at 55mph and about 45mpg at 70mph running the A/C. This is better than my G2 Prius, but not nearly as good as the G4. Around town will bring that down fast, but I can't get under 30mpg unless it's pure gridlock. If you get under 40mpg on the highway in this thing you are doing 80+ or just not driving smart. My 21-23 mile commutes to and from work in almost all 55 zones are always in the high 50's. Here's this morning on top, and last night on the way home from the convenience store.

Exactly! I went out looking for a new Prius and came home with the Civic. I actually like the looks of the Prius from most angles, but the interior was horrible. Bland, ugly shapes with cheap ass cloth and an overly expensive Vinyl upgrade. The seating in front is minivan like in it's positioning and lack of support, and the back seat is way more cramped than my Civic or the older Prius. All that and it cost about $6000 more out the door equally equipped. My drive is all highway so the slight gas savings will never make up that price difference.

To the post two above, I look at tank averages over a long period of time, lifetime average.

Yours says 42.4 MPG which is really good, but that would be a bit low lifetime for a 2nd gen Prius. My 3rd gen was over 50 MPG over 30k logged miles. The 4th gen would probably have netted my 55 mpg lifetime, but I won't be buying one.

I agree in mixed driving there is not much of a contest. Look at the details of that Fuelly though (dates and notes). I have been experimenting driving for Uber to make extra money to fund my summer activities. Half of my logged miles have been for Uber driving around the city rushing with A/C on blast. That Fuelly also includes the dealer's first 140 miles of test driving and delivery. I've still not recorded a tank of just regular driving, but I was up over 55mpg at the 250 mile mark on one tank before ruining it with a 300 mile night of Uber which brought it down to 47.6. A prius gets much better mileage in the city, even an older one, but this Civic beats a G2 and matches a G3 on the highway. I was stating that if you do mostly highway there is no reason to pay more for a boring Prius anymore.

Here is my two starts for my trip home last night. The first trip was from work across town to Aldi 3.6 miles with six full stops and three 90 degree turns all in 35 zones with after work traffic, no A/C. The second is 21 miles home on 55mph state and county highways with six full stops and no A/C. This is basically my daily commute. I am lucky to have it so easy, but anyone with a similar drive should know that a Hybrid won't really get them much if any better mileage.

That's really good. I had a 2016 EX-turbo rental for 4 days, filled it up, drove local highways and city. Gage was over 40 for a while, but settled into 39 to 40 for the remainder. At fillup it was 39.3 MPG actual aflter fillup. Always impressive when a car beats its EPA estimated MPG.

Hondas always beat the EPA estimated mpg. My 2013 si would get 36mpg and I hardly ever drove highway. This EXT gets at least 40-47mpg. I am curious to modify the exhaust and reflash but I'm waiting on Honda Data to bring out a new video they promised including top speed.. ;)

I was wondering if anyone ownes both, if so how do they compare for MPG or l/100km? What car do you prefer?

For people who do and don't have both cars, can you tell me what you get with you civic for MPG in city (20 km or 13 mile drive, stop and go traffic)

The 2016 Honda Civic EX-T (1.5L engine) is $30,207.72 (everything included, before negotiating) has an insurance cost of $172 monthly

The 2016 Toyota Prius Base upgrade package is $32,639.18 (everything included, before negotiating) has an insurance cost of $142 monthly

I'm hoping to keep the car for as long as I can 200,000km (160,000 miles) or longer if possible. I need a car that will be able to carry 2 kids with convertable car seats that will be rear facing and a stroller, 2-4 duffle bags and possibly a pack&play. i need a car that will get me good MPG on short commutes (work commute is 20km or 13miles 5 days a week) and good milage for highway commutes (max 500km or 311 miles one way)

Thank you for your input ahead of time :)
Just my $.02 worth; had the first Prius '01 for 15 years and it was still going strong except it developed an incurable problem with the AC.

I don't know if the OP bought their car yet, but in stop and go traffic, the Prius does a lot better. DH owns a '16 Prius and I just got the new Civic. I drove the Prius on my work commute for several days and averaged about 66mpg and on my civic it's around 37.

How so? ...because you can't get 48 MPG? You wanna know what's sad? Wanting a Civic but not being able to justify the purchase to the wife. That's sad. At least you have one. ;)
