an exhaust will not throw a CEL unless you are touching the downpipe.

Not sure what the requirements in Pennsylvania are but an exhaust does not affect emissions at all.

To be honest I don’t know either, I’m not very technical at componentry for cars despite being a huge enthusiast. I’m assuming the Legamax is a catback system so it should have no issues, but that’s just me assuming.

Yes, the Legamax is a catback system and will have zero effect on emissions output. Sound output is the only thing that will change.

The main concerns I'd have for getting an exhaust are (in order of importance, but all are deal breakers)

1) reliability - will they start rattling after awhile? are the welds shitty and prone to fail (FnF1!). I've had a comptech exhaust in my s2k and they all started rattling and needed to be redone inside, which is a lot of effort and money for a used exhaust that was basically worth less than the service.

2) sound - will i go deaf in it? Will I get pulled over?

3) fitment and looks - does it looks like i'm launching pomelos from the rear? are they aligned properly so it doesn't have an alignment of a poorly done boob job?

4) power - my tracking days are behind me, i just want it to not LOSE power and I'm good. I had an HKS catback in my Legacy GT that some reported to actually lose power over stock @_@. 2.5 inch piping

Things I wouldn't be worried about:

1) Emissions - never had a problem

2) CEL - never had a problem (not sure if even possible, unless whoever installed it was jeremy clarkson)

3) warranty - never had a problem (also can swap back to stock if you're paranoid about this kind of stuff)

Maybe you didn’t beat on it hard enough
Sorry, but I disagree and can back up what will solo said. Have done 15 full track days ( mont Tremblant and Watkins Glen), 5 to 6 30 min sessions, sometimes 45min. In 80 weather I can confirm no over heating flat out. That being said, if your track is in the south and it reaches 100 degrees, overheating is a real issue especially on a turbo car and isn't something new to Honda. Especially if you're tuned. The Current generation VW golf R only gets detuned to 280hp in south affric and Australia compared to 300 in US/Can because of overheating risk in those countries

hello me here in Spain before buying it, check with the Honda dealer to see if they were going to put a problem when installing an exhaust system.
they told me that there was no problem in any case if they had said yes because before going to a fault the dealer would remove the parts that had installed in case it was something serious.
but here they do not usually put any problem even if you modify some larger part of the car.

Sheesh, that’s not why they detuned the Mk7.5 Golf R. It was done to meet new WLTP regulations for emissions.

The VW EA888 will happily make 400hp + tuned with bolt on mods without even dreaming of overheating. I should know, I traded one in on my Type R.

Please stop spreading BS.

I didn't say the golf R can't make 400 HP. My comment about the 280 HP came from an Australian magazine that reviewed and explained the detuned golf R in that market back in 2016/2018. Since you have hands on experience with running a 400hp tuned golf R without overeating on track, can you at least confirm how many track days you have been to. How long were the session and how hot it was? To dispell the BS ;)

Read this, plenty of people with tuned car over heating. Take home message. Regardless of car brand. Turbo cars especially if tuned/not tuned can overheat on really hot tracks if you are pushing it (southern US, Australia, South Africa, Dubai, etc in the summer). Street driving usually not an issue

I’ve only been to three. But I’m not arguing seat time.

The new detuned 7.5 R can still hit heat threshold for the DSG or engine temps and give a limp mode with slow down message on track, just like the 6, 7, and even the Civic Type R does.

Your post clearly said current generation Golf R, but your link is talking about older mk6 cars. They don’t use the same turbos as the mk7. Heck, the mk6 R doesn’t even use the same engine as the mk7 cars.

The 7.5R is “detuned” for emissions purposes only. It’s not an ECU mapping change, but a slight change in the exhaust system.

Here is the information for you on reason why SA/ has less power go to paragraph that starts with the good. BTW don't get me wrong, I own the Civic type R + 2017 VW golf sportwagen. In my dream world they would sell the golf R wagon in Canada. If they ever do I will replace my wagon with that.

I can’t get my head around that, since most of South Africa is cooler than Florida and Texas.

2019 7.5s are 4hp less than 2018 in the US and set at 288hp now in most of the rest of the world now due to those aforementioned WLTP regs.

It’s cool you have both! We do too. My wife’s DD is a 17 GTI SE.

My main concern is that I do it and something goes wrong down the road and the dealer sees the modified exhaust and denies any warranty coverage.
All US consumers are protected by the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act (15USC§2302)

April 11, 2018: FTC Staff Warns Companies that It Is Illegal to Condition Warranty Coverage on the Use of Specified Parts or Services
  • FTC warns companies they’ll face legal action should they continue to illegally state or imply to consumers:
    • The use of [company name] parts is required to keep your . . . manufacturer’s warranties and any extended warranties intact.
    • This warranty shall not apply if this product . . . is used with products not sold or licensed by [company name].
    • This warranty does not apply if this product . . . has had the warranty seal on the [product] altered, defaced, or removed.

May 2015: FTC: Will using 'aftermarket' or recycled parts void my warranty?

Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act (15 USC Chapter 50) effective June 4, 1975
  • United States Code: Title 15 – Commerce and Trade
No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer’s using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade, or corporate name; except that the prohibition of this subsection may be waived by the Commission if—
  • (1) the warrantor satisfies the Commission that the warranted product will function properly only if the article or service so identified is used in connection with the warranted product, and
  • (2) the Commission finds that such a waiver is in the public interest.
The Commission shall identify in the Federal Register, and permit public comment on, all applications for waiver of the prohibition of this subsection, and shall publish in the Federal Register its disposition of any such application, including the reasons therefor.

The FTC has a wealth of information and resources on their site regarding the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act, including Businessperson's Guide to Federal Warranty Law.
  • In addition to Federal Warranty Law, each state has their own warranty laws which are enforced by each state’s Department of Insurance.
    • Should a company violate a state’s D.o.I laws, the state can revoke the company’s license to sell warranties in their state, in addition to any additional legal fees and fines from the FTC.
  • Additional protection is granted to consumers by the Consumer Protection Agency at both federal and state levels.

My best advice to anyone is if a company representative, dealership, etc. is stating something different than what’s in the written warranty, or the written warranty violates the MMWA (15 USC Chapter 50), reach out directly to the company’s GM or legal department.

All this information is super helpful. I’m leaning towards doing it. What’s the best place to get the actual parts? I saw the exhaust I wanted was on PRL Motorsports site and I wasn’t sure if I could order from there and then just take it over to be installed once it arrived.

So as of late I’ve had an itch to throw an aftermarket exhaust onto my car. I really like the sound the HKS Legamax produces and I was considering doing it to my car. However, I’m kind of at an impasse with actually going through with it.

My main concern is that I do it and something goes wrong down the road and the dealer sees the modified exhaust and denies any warranty coverage. I get they have to prove the modified part caused the damage but they have a leg up since fighting them would require much more time and effort from myself. And let’s say something major went that would cost thousands to replace, well then I could potentially be on the hook for that. Plus, this is my only car, and if something did go wrong I would be SOL.

So for those reasons, I’m really on the fence. Part of me wants to do it, the other part is thinking about the what if’s afterwards. There’s a highly rated garage close to my house that would easily be able to do it which is how I got here in the first place.

For those who have modded their car... did you have the same concerns as I do or did you just say “screw it” and go ahead anyways?
I do everything I want up until the ECU. I tend not to touch that cause I definitely know that could fuck with your warranty. Other than that, have a ball. Don’t take mess with the CAT!
