Thank you both for the kind words.

I wanted to check in and give an update. The police report (finally!) came out last week.. Witnesses confirmed what we already knew; the other driver was distracted and never touched the brakes, hitting the rear of my girlfriend's Civic at approximately 60 MPH. The other driver admitted to police that her "purse fell on the floor and I bent down to pick it up. By the time I looked up, there was no time to stop." She was driving a 2012 VW Jetta. It was listed as being towed from the scene but also listed as drive-able (?) Not understanding how, but hey, maybe we all need to buy 2012 Jettas if they are that tough! Not surprisingly, the Civic was declared a total loss.

While my girlfriend didn't have any broken bones, she is suffering from a concussion, a severe case of vertigo, whiplash, and tinnitus. Both the vertigo and the tinnitus has been getting a little better day by day She's been working from home all this time - we are both so thankful for how understanding and flexible her employers have been. As long as her vertigo continues to improve, she's hoping to actually go back into the office next week.

So thanks again for everyone's well-wishes, positive comments, similar stories, etc. I am thankful every single day for waking up in the morning and seeing my girlfriend sleeping next to me. A bit melodramatic, perhaps, but the accident pictures don't lie... it could have been much, much worse.
Great time hear! Hopefully everything turns out OK.

Wow, what a horrible accident. Thankfully she is OK. Pretty amazing that she wasn't hurt more. Distracted driving is a really scary thing.

I am impressed with the safety of these cars. I had the unfortunate experience of using the safety features in mine a few weeks ago. On my drive home, a car came shooting into my lane from the left. She made a left hand turn across my lane through a line of stopped traffic. I drove into her going 35 and never had a chance to hit the brakes or even turn the wheel. Even though I was perfectly attentive, I didn't see her until it was hitting her. Really scary stuff!!!

My airbag went off and I walked away without a single scratch. I'm still amazed by that fact. Here is what the car looked like afterwards. It had less than 600 miles on it and was totaled. I was upset about the car (which has since been replaced), but the whole incident could have ended much differently. As has been said in previous posts...cars can be replaced, people cannot.

Glad to hear she is doing better. I really hope you have a very good lawyer for all that pain and suffering. Did you get another civic?

You can't tell me the local cab companies care any more about me than Uber. At least when I get in my Uber, I know the fare and I know I dont need cash. Cabs around here were notorious for taking the long route to extend the fare, and also somehow the credit card machine never works. I had one call the cops on me because I refused to pay cash. The cops told the cabbie to take my card or the fare wasnt going to be charged. Guess what, he took my credit card.

Thank you. We did pick up another car last weekend but she went with a 2019 Accord Sport 2.0T 6MT. We drove a 2019 Civic Si coupe and the 2.0T Accord. The Accord won because she "wanted a practical car with a sporty side, rather a sporty car with a practical side." At our age that makes total sense, and she said it was admittedly a tough decision. She loved the Civic Si and was like "Hello old friend, I've missed you" when she test-drove it. But the roominess and safety features of the Accord ultimately won her over. And while it's not as zippy or nimble as the Civic Si, the Accord is certainly no slouch with that 2.0T and 6-speed manual.

DUDE! That Accord 2.0T is an amazing family car. Ive test driven the 6MT and the 10AT. It really moves even stock. With a Ktuner my friends tell me they are amazing. Congrats on the new car.

you sound like a cranky old cab driver who hasnt come into the 21st century. It's ok. If you have time, read up on corruption with the cab industry in Dallas Tx. lots of good reading. Im not speaking out of my ass when i tell you DFW cab business was some of the shadiest shit going on in city politics for a long time. It took Uber and Lyft coming in to get the cabs to follow regulations and get their shit together.

Let me be clear, I have never said UBER was great, they fuck their drivers and treat them like shit. But they have offered an alternative and they actually show up when you request them. Unlike Taxis here who may come when they want or never. My last straw was when it took 3 hrs to get a cab to pick me up from a bar and take me home. When I called the 3rd time to ask where my cab was, the person answering the phone said if I was able to keep bugging them on the phone I was sober enough to drive. lmao who the hell says that.

I used taxi services in a number of countries, including such exotic lands as China and Canada, :) very often to/from airports, sometimes at inhuman hours like 4 am, and generally found them exceeding my expectations of reliability (coming on time when ordered earlier).

As for overcharging it exists everywhere, in particular with tourists, sometimes the sky is the limit. They are regulated to widely varying extents in different places. Maybe the cleanest and most honest appeared to be the taxis in Japan. They wear white gloves and don’t take tips.

I only used an Uber-like service in China and it was very good and quick.
