Technically i paid tax “twice” but not double. I paid taxes in cali when purchased.. then when i registered in nevada i had to pay that tax difference at dmv because the tax rate in my county is higher then the county in cali i got it from. If i paid it all in nevada it would of been same exact cost. The finance person in cali wasnt familiar with out of state buyer. But all in all did not pay double and shouldnt have to. They did register car in cali , i had to call and resolve it. Finance lady didnt know what she was doing.. as my first out of state purchase i didnt either hah

Did anyone here bought their CTR out of state and had to pay taxes twice?

I thought the dealer just send the tax to your home state where you plan to register and thats it.
I came very close to buying my car in Arizona--as I was solidifying the numbers with the sales guy, I was told that AZ has a close to $500 documentation fee, which is way higher than what we pay here in CA (< $50 I believe). Arizona also required you to pay a small fee for license even though I was registering the car in CA. Keep these things in mind and get a complete list of all fees, etc. if you choose to buy the car out of state.

Your information is factually inaccurate.

No buyer gets a choice on which state they pay taxes to, as taxes are paid to the the state in which the vehicle will be registered [plated]. In order for a plate application to be submitted, it must be submitted with a check for the applicable sales tax, else the application will not be processed.

Think he was warning about fees, not taxes?

I'm not aware of any documentation fee in excess of $100 that isn't related to titling, registering, and licensing the vehicle in the state in which it will be titled and registered in [the state in which the buyer has a physical address].

The only fees you pay when you buy a car are to the state in which it is registered and titled, except for a handful of minute fees paid to the state in which the dealership is located, of which will usually add up to <$100, and will be folded into the loan, not separated out.

It would likely prove more beneficial to look up this information on the buyer's state's DMV website...

this is correct

Only situation where I heard of someone paying "double taxes" is if the state requires property taxes on top of the sales tax for the car.

This happened to a customer of mine in South Carolina
