Sweet! Looking forward to try that out tomorrow!
Debugging has to be turned on and you’ll need to have your phone forget the car. Change USB from host to device and then reboot the radio. You’ll know if it’s working right as your phone will start charging from the smartphone port before you reboot the radio. Once it has rebooted, connect your phone and then it should ask you about allowing CarPlay. Hit “allow” and you should be back in business.

I turned debugging back on, changed USB 2 to device and rebooted the system. I lost USB function of my USB 1 again so I went back, turned off debug, made sure USB was on host then rebooted. USB worked again! I tried forgetting car and deleted my phone from the car “phones” and “Bluetooth list”, then re-paired. USB still works but Carpaly still not working. I’ll try more when I have more time but the USB 1 working again is good for now. Thanks for the help and anymore advice would be awesome

Once you see that your phone begins charging after setting the USB to device (not host), disconnect it from the cable. Then reboot the headunit. Before plugging your phone back in, make sure to have your phone forget your car. Hopefully it works for you. It looks like debugging gets turned on every time the headunit powers on and off so I don't think it was our problem. The problem came from when the USB somehow got changed to host after installing Honda Hack as I installed mine without a laptop.

A little off topic but I hope you don't mind... I thought maybe those who are familiar with hacking the radio could help. I updated my radio on my 2017 Honda Civic EX-T sedan with a official update from Honda. The update installed fine, however I now have issues with Android Auto. You can do a search with my forum name and find out the situation- it is under the thread "Infotainment Software Update." Technically the update was meant for the 2 door cars and I thought I would update my car with it to get some of the enhancements/fixes. Everything works fine except Android Auto- others have confirmed the same issue. I then went ahead and got the older version of the software that was on my phone originally that worked fine. The problem is my radio now won't let me install the older version of the software- I get a message that states the latest version is installed and it stops. Does anyone know of a way to get around that and perhaps force the radio to install the older version? I am just using usb sticks that I purchased from a Honda dealer that have the official software updates on them. I am just trying to get my radio back to how it was before I did the last update that screwed up AA. Thanks

I finally got CarPlay to work! I went in to my car settings Bluetooth devices and “delete device”. I then followed instructions on carplaylife.com:
1. Connected USB
2. On my phone: Settings -> General -> CarPlay (note: CarPlay option was not there before)
3. Enable CarPlay when USB is plugged
4. Held voice control on steering wheel to pair device.
5. Poof! CarPlay was on my Infotainment center menu!

I think it was all about doing the steps in order. For some reason pairing the Bluetooth first before setting up the CarPlay did not work. But setting up the phone with the car then allowing CarPlay to set up Bluetooth worked! Let’s see if this continues to work. Thanks for the help! CivicX forum always comes in clutch!

Mad props to @fullservice98 and @BigOlly83 for sharing this info! I had this same issue, but didn't realize it until recently. I had just done a shifter upgrade, and I actually thought the problem was hardware related. Fortunately, I found this thread. I had to remember how to change the USB to device, but once I did that and rebooted, it was good to go.

For reference:

If Apple CarPlay or Android Auto doesn't work, and your USB 1 port isn't charging your phone, follow these steps:

1. Enable Developer Mode--- https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/guide-how-to-enter-developer-mode-2017-t3621582
2. Disable USB Debugging--Android Settings > Developer options and disable USB debugging
3. Change USB 1 from Host to Device---
  • Press the power, menu, and brightness button at once, and hold until you enter a new menu with two options.
  • Click the bottom option called Detail Information & Settings.
  • Now hold the MENU key to enter another menu.
  • Then Hold the HOME key to enter the last menu. You should first hear two consecutive beeps and then one final beep.
  • Lastly, change the role of USB Port from Host to Device
4. Delete Honda from your Apple CarPlay vehicle list.
5. Reboot HU.

This post has allowed me to get Carplay back after the Honda hack. I have a 2018 CTR that didn’t have the web browser but I found the instructions on YouTube to enable the web browser icon. Also I couldn’t get into developer mode. So the only way to do it was the pressing the brightness button, power icon, and menu icon simultaneously to get into a series of hidden menus. After I performed the hack my smartphone usb 12v output disappeared which in turn stopped communicating to the infotainment center. Along with that Carplay also disappeared. After trying several things this last post is what got everything back in action. The only steps I didn’t do was delete the Honda icon on Carplay because it didn’t have the minus button to delete it and I don’t know where to disable the USB debugging since it won’t let me get into the developer mode.

Get DEVELOPER Tools from Playstore. It will allow you to get into developer mode from its app Icon , rather than the more complex Button Mode.

Idk if this will make any difference but Apple released an update to iOS 12.1.3 that says it fixes CarPlay connectivity issues. Might be worth updating and seeing if it does anything.

I’m running Apple iOS update 12.1.4, no hack on the head unit and still have horrible connectivity issues.

Here are the changes for a 2019 Civic HU (with volume knob)

I can’t take credit for off of this, a lot of research on the web and used info from:
  • Sosa Info Tech on YouTube. He has great info about unlocking engine restrictions, browser, etc on the 2019 HU.
  • codeage on xda forum
  • u/N-kryptic on reddit
  • Maybe some more but those are the 3 main references

I started by:
  1. “Deleting” my phone from the HU and “Forgetting” the HU from my phone. I have an iPhone on 12.4 iOS.

Unlock Developer Mode:
  1. HOME > Settings > System
  2. Go to the bottom of the “ALL” tab and select “Detailed Information”

  4. Go to the bottom and select “Build Number” (7) times to received the “Enter Passcord” notification. Yes Passcord

  5. Select: Kernel Version > Model Number > Build Number > Status
  6. Select “Back” button and Developer Options will be available

Diagnostic Mode:

  1. Press ALL (3) buttons simultaneously > Dimmer (at top) > Phone > Vol Knob, until you enter the menu.

    • Honda Civic 10th gen No CarPlay after hack 168370-7502f85b6eb7a72117652cf87e8b4182
    • I tried all the things about setting to device and host. The status would flash and then say disconnected to my phone. After going back and forth a couple of times, my iphone started going into CarPlay continuously. The USB port always reverts back to Host when I go back into the menu, but CarPlay is back. I never lost the charging part?

Misc Info:

  • You stay in developer mode once you activate it.
  • In the diagnostic mode you can play with individual speaker volumes to try to make up for the So-So / Just Ok sound quality. I ended up turning the volume up on the subwoofer to help with Honda’s lousy choice of a band pass frequency

I know I have the wrong gen of civic as the background, but its blue and I like it. IF anyone can find this style in a GenX HB, I would love a link to it.
