As the title states, my iPhone is rebooting repeatedly during my 45 minute drive to work while connected to CarPlay. Once I get to work, or when I get home, the phone is fine. The only time it does this is when connected to CarPlay. I've tried different cables (both Apple and aftermarket) and get the same results. I've had the car since 2017 and this just started happening within the last week or two.

2017 Civic Si Sedan
iPhone X
iOS 12.1.2

My wife also has an iPhone X on 12.1.2 and uses CarPlay in our Grand Cherokee and does not have this issue. So I'm leaning more toward it being an issue with the OS in the Si's headunit....

Anyone else experiencing this? I can't believe it's just me.

No issues here. I have an iPhone XS with 12.1.2 and carplay works perfectly with no issues. A headunit can't make a phone reboot, the phone is most probably the issue here.

Good point about the headunit....now I feel like an idiot. Still though, it seems so strange that it only happens when connected to carplay.

Have you tried all the normal troubleshooting stuff...
  • Quit out of all your running apps
  • Powercycle your phone
I agree with a previous poster - it is likely something with your iPhone.

Another suggestion might be to take your iPhone to the dealership and see if they will let you "test" your iPhone in a new / other car. If the problem follows the iPhone around then you know it is the iPhone. If it does not, perhaps there is some weird issue with your car that no one has run into yet - although if your wife's iPhone works that seems unlikely but you never know.

With all the CarPlay issues I have had in the past, this is one I did not encounter. Weird.

Yep. The irony here is that I work in IT for a living so I feel like a real moron even asking for help. But after it happened 3 times in 45 minutes this morning (and not once since I got here) I'm sort of at the end of my rope.

Me too.

Might be worth rebooting the headhunt too

Its all good, I probably would have asked on the forum if this was happening to me. Most likely it's a software issue that is causing the phone to crash while running CarPlay, that's the only logical reason I can think of. Other than powercycling the phone as someone else suggested, If this is really bugging you i'd suggest backing up all of your data and resetting your phone maybe to see if it makes a difference. Also one way to verify 100% that it's your phone's issue is to connect it to your wife's Grand Cherokee and drive around with carplay on and see if it does anything.

 yeah, she won't like that idea. Now that she's used to driving soccer-mom-mobile's she doesn't like driving stick anymore. This is the same girl that loved my Mazdaspeed 6 so much she had to get her own (it was pretty cool having two of those at one time).

My guess is a firmware issue triggered by an app or a recent software update. Did you try reinstalling the OS from iTunes? That typically solves my issues.

For reference, I use a 5S test device with no issues in the Si. :)

I had similar issues in my CTR, but not my Si or Pilot. I did a “reset” of the infotainment system and power cycled my phone and have had no issues since. Oh. I also deleted the car from my CarPlay list before I reconnect3d as well.
