Sorry if this has been done before, but I couldn't find a thread search. hmm am I missing one somewhere or is there not one?

Anyway as the title says it is time for my first Type R oil change. What time of oil (weight) does Honda call for us to use? I assume for many reasons, but also the length of the oil change that it is for sure full synthetic. I didn't get an Type R specific owners manual with my car. From scanning over it the manual I got looks like just a general civic manual... Anyway plan to do the oil change myself at a friends shop using his lift. (Don't really trust dealers with specialty cars as they all want to go for a drive and the Type R seems to be especially that from the horror stories I have read.

Thanks for the answers. I assume the oil change is pretty straight forward and normal for this car correct? I haven't really looked under it or into really.

Thanks!

Honda calls for their OEM 0W-20 full synthetic or really any API certified 0W-20. Personally run Motul 300v in all of our cars because of the added stress from several track days a year and hours of dyno time.
As far as the change is concerned there is nothing special about it. Change the oil just like you would on any other car.

There is no specific Type R owners manual. However, the Civic Hatchback owners manual includes all of the Type R specific information alongside the information from the other trims. Type R information is labeled as "2.0 L engine models"

I've found that 0W-20 oil is basically all full synthetic.

See attached section from the owners manual detailing the oil change.

The Type R shares the hatchback owner’s manual. Don’t change out the factory oil too early. Honda states that it’s important to change it once the maintenance minder comes up. 0w-20 fully synthetic oil is what this engine calls for. I personally use Motul 300v, Honda OEM A01 filter with a HKS engine oil cooler for track use. Oil change is straightforward. Remove the belly panel. Oil pan drain plug and oil filter are both right there. Replace the drain plug washer and filter with every oil change.

Def not changing it early... To me I am changing it way past what I would have liked to... I am at just over 9,000 miles and I am at 10% left in the maintenance minder. That seems crazy to me, but I know car dealers are upping the miles between changes so I guess 10K is becoming the new norm... I plan to change this weekend even if it is still at 10%... I know it goes from 10 to 5% at normal slow pace and then form 5% to 0% real quick... I want to change for sure before 0%... haha

I just called my salesman at the dealership I purchased from (105 miles away...I have one a few miles from my house but I just don't trust their staff unfortunately) and his response for my FIRST oil change is to do it now...I'm currently at 6,000 miles and have owned the car for 6 months putting the oil life % at approx 50 (All freeway commute miles of speeds over 60+). With all the ppl on here stating that the oil filter was over tightened at factory leading to oil leaks I wanted to change sooner then later but not to early. My salesman has sold all their Type R's to date as well as 1 or 2 new NSX's. He's an older gentleman who appreciates cars and said with the Type R...especially for the first oil change, HE personally would not wait for the MM to kick in. Hope this helps...def a big topic on here with many different responses. You could also check the dip stick every few months and keep track of oil level and color...ya know, good old fashion way, lol ~cheers.

Take what the sales guys and even service guys say with a grain of salt. Their ultimate goal is to make sales and sell you services. Freeway driving isn't at as strenuous which is why your MM is showing 50%. The engineers specifically said to change the factory oil once MM has come on. There was a link to a TSB about it somewhere on the forums... but it's your car. Do with it as you please. I strongly suggest to get a UOA from somewhere like Blackstone Labs to truly identify the health of the engine.

What about other FK8 owners? When did you change the Engine Oil for the first time ? (10000km/6000miles?)

7500 miles was the first change (Minder B), 16000 miles for the second (Minder A).

You can change it. I wouldn’t go past 3-4000 miles on a turbo car that I drive idc what a UOA says. I won’t use or pay for those there a scam they want to have everyone change there the latest u possibly can to much technical bs that I don’t wanna worry about we live in a go green era today... an another thing is the type r calls for 0w-20 when these engine start to get miles on them an people start to experiment with different weights of oil an see that it doesn’t matter an will have no ill effect except on gas mileage. If I end up keeping my car long enough after it get 20-25k on it I will never run 0w-20 in it warranty or not. Idc what anyone say I will argue until I am blue in the face there is only so much clearance in an engine it’s not that everyone tells you or that that’s what you hear that engines have tighter tolerances today they might be but there not that tight an they can’t be in a turbo car. The main reason we use lighter weight oils 80-90% why is because of gas mileage an emissions. Point blank if everyone wants to make it out like it a bigger discussion have at it... i’ll run 0w30 or 5w-30 after she gets some miles on her my car will run just fine an my turbocharger will be a lot happier guaranteed you can take that to the bank. My gtr calls for 0w40 it’s twin turbo it’s a newer engine but its all performance an people know they don’t get good gas mileage an Nissan wants a thicker oil because gas mileage don’t matter the protection of the engine matter get my point the type r is a performance car but engine is mass produced an goes in other cars get where I am going if u wanna run water forever then stick with 0w20 an when you run it over 6-7000 miles it will be 0w-5 after the fuel thins it out let me know how much protection you have then

That's the most ignorant thing I've read in a while. You also might want to look into Rosetta Stone or Hooked On Phonics or something...

Dude... when I type I type fast an on my phone an don’t always have time to get out what I wanna say because I say a lot we all know that lol an idc... if u don’t like it don’t read it u might wanna get half a brain an quit quoting Honda like there the end all be all on everything oil. Maybe you just don’t like what I have to say an have to comment on what I say on everything post or thread. Quit following be a leader... change your water oil at 7-10k see what your cams an top of the engine look like after your engine gets some miles on her

You're telling people to disregard manufacture specifications and guidelines with no supporting evidence as to why. You then go on saying that oil analysis is pointless. You sir are the one with half a brain. I guess you're some internet wizard who somehow knows more than the engineers and people who analyze the oil.

I am telling people do do anything people can do what they want buddy... read I said what I am going to do. I stated at 6-7000 miles yes you can change your oil... I mean that kind of a no brainer. Go on other forums an see what they run or not even that go ask some people what they run in Subaru’s sti’s Wrx’s gtr’s evo’s whatever you want to look at... that actually run them on the track or run them hard. There not running 0w-20 I can tell you that... I sure don’t run 0w-40 in my gtr. I run 5w-50 amsoil signature series oil.. my car is fine not one hiccup 41k on it. I also change it every 2000 miles so I don’t need my oil looked at to tell me that I can let it go til 7000 miles. My Buick grand national calls for 10w-30 I run 20w-50 vr1 Valvoline you going to tell me I am dumb for running that. Do what you want to do. I will do what I have been doing the last 21 years I have been driving cars. Never blew an engine up from an oil related issue. Pushing power well that another issue
