so I just bought a 17 civic that has been sitting on the lot since aug 2017. My dealer wants the first oil change and to check the tires at 3,000 miles. But I’m not sure my maintenceminder will be even close to 10% by then. It’s currently stuck on 60% after 1200 miles. Question is: do I go in at 3,000 regardless or just wait for the MM? I know all about the moly poly shit and break in oil I’m just curious what you would do since the car has sat for over a year.

If you're dealership includes free oil changes for life or something (mine did) you could go in if you want to, if not, they just want to take your money. Getting an oil change at 3k miles isnt a thing on modern cars with modern oil.

It is a curious question given the age of your "new" car.. a 2017 bought new at the end of 2018.

The manual will say that you should change the oil per the MM indicator or once per year. Of course, this assumes some vehicle use during the year and your "new" car only had what, 100 miles on it when bought last month?

http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/...M&t=H&model=CIVIC&year=2017&referer=ownerlink - see the very top...
If a Maintenance Minder indicator does not appear more than 12 months after the display is reset, change the engine oil every year

Nothing is free.
If dealer give you free life oil change, he will take your money on another way like replacement of cabin filter ( you may not need) for $60 (?) wich you can buy yourself half price.
And many more other thing at higher price than your small town mechanic or if you do yourself.

PJW7454.
I'll follow MM for first oil change.
Oil change once a year is for a car on a road. Cold engine to hot engine oil.

FREE Oil changes are just a method to get you to come back to the Dealership, where they will "VERY KINDLY, do a "FREE" Inspection, and find all sorts of things you NEED to have done, with an associated over-inflated bill.

NOTHING in this world is FREE .. the sooner you learn that, the better off you will be.

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is .

Why not just decline all the upsell? My dad is good at this, he keeps saying no that the service advisors don't even try anymore. When they say this needs attention, he says no then when they try to explain, he cuts them off again and says no, louder. I wish I was more that way in life lol

Ok before this thread is derailed let me clear a couple things up. I only get the 3,000 mile and 6,000 mile change for free that’s it. I’m not worried since I can do the rest but the service manager wants it on record that I had an oil change or they may argue my warranty coverage later on. Again I’m probably gonna ignore that 6,000 change since that is ridiculous. I guess I’ll call the service manager again and find out if I can wait for the MM.

IMO
Oil change is need for a car on the road, not on parking lot.
If you are worried about warranty follow what dealer said. It will cost more than your car need but you'll sleep well.

If I'm right, Honda Company ( not dealer ) say keep original oil until MM ; read here on the forum.

I do my own oil change sonner than later, 6 K miles are OK to me.

You are in no way obligated to accept or do their free oil changes to maintain a warranty with them. Your warranty is through Honda, not the dealership. This is a tactic to get you back into the dealership so they can sell you on something else. This can vary from; Alignment, Tire Rotations, Brake Pad Change, Rotor Resurfacing, Coolant Flush, Transmission Flush, Cabin Filter, Intake Filter, etc. The dealership does not care about maintenance scheduling. They will try to get you in there as much as possible. Even if you're 10,000 miles away from some sort of service, they'll attempt to get you to do it now.

The truth is, you don't need the oil change at 3,000 or 6,000 miles. You can go by the MM and be just fine.

I however, for peace of mind and to keep an eye on my cars health, change my oil every 5,000 miles. This allows me to see how it's doing and if their is oil dilution, helps me minimize it. I personally use Mobil 1 EP and the OEM Honda Filters, costing roughly $35 in total.

Besides all that, I can't trust the dealership to change the oil properly. Too many loose oil drain plugs and starved engines already popping up from dealer changes. A friend of mine works as a Master Tech at Honda and had an Accord come in where another dealership had forgotten to put the dipstick back in. Car drove 200 miles before it came in to his dealership with a check engine light. Drained the oil and only a drop came out. Motor was toast.

Moral of the story; Do it yourself and rest with peace of mind.

Sad, but true. Too risky.
If you do use the dealer, inspect thoroughly their work still at the place or at the nearest flat ground and then again at home and keep watching it.

I would go a step further-- you are under no Obligation to have the Dealer do scheduled oil changes at all. There is no reason why anyone else, including you cannot do them, and those changes will be valid for your warranty, provided you have some proof that you actually did the oil change.

ie paper record of when you did, what you did, and ideally receipts for materials (ie Oil and filters, ideally with receipt dates that are close to the documented service work carried out. A few supporting photos might not hurt. At the extreme, also keep any oil analysis reports.

Now, if you don't secure the drain plug correctly, and loose all your oil, and the engine seizes up, then that is obviously your fault, or whoever did the oil change.

As far as an oil change is concerned, I would argue that you, as the owner, who CARES for your car, will spend the time to do a better and more thorough job, than the "who knows who" that is doing the oil change at the Dealer, and is under pressure to do it as quickly as possible, to maximize profit.
Don;t think for one moment that is the seasoned Honda Trained mechanic, who is going to be the one to change your oil, with loving care !!

Sorry, I am sure I am preaching to the converted here in this forum. :rolleyes1:

Update: called the dealership and talked to the service advisor. Left a message and he immediately called me back. Mil was impressed. Told him my issue and he said come back later around 6k if the mm is still high. I’m really happy because he could’ve easily told me to come anyways lol. I think he figured out I knew a thing or two. Thank you civic x lmao
