Super solid answer my man.Honestly, you want the LA or SD area for the car culture in general, regardless of cultural influences. Many aftermarket companies are located within SoCal, so getting parts is easy. They also tend to have events and there's always car meets going on. Now, keep in mind, you can take a 30 min drive and be in a highly affordable area. You can look into the following areas near LA that are affordable.
-West Covina (LA County)
-Chino Hills (San Bernadino County)
-Rancho Cucamonga (San Bernadino County)
-Upland (LA County)
-La Verne (LA County)
-Monrovia (LA County)
-Fullerton (Orange County)
Downsides to living in California;
And the BIGGEST downside to living in California.....gun laws. The gun laws suck. They're designed to make honest citizens feel like criminals. They gun laws are poorly written and designed by people who have no idea what they're talking about. Feel good laws that do nothing but weaken the people. Last I checked, criminals don't follow laws.
- Politically, California is 3 states. NorCal is liberal, Mid-Cal is Dem, SoCal is mostly Repub with Dem.
- Cost of living is high. Expect to pay insane rates for rent if you want to live somewhere decent.
- Fires. During the summer, most of the state is on fire. Ash and smoke in the air and all over your car.
- Earthquakes. Periodically the ground shakes, but it's sometimes so small you don't even notice.
- Smog Checks. Every 2 years, your vehicle needs a smog check. It gets annoying when heavily modified.
- State Referee. Cop doesn't like something about your car? Well you get a free ticket to see the state ref so they can go over every detail on your vehicle. No bueno.
Positives to living in California;
The other major positive is what you were interested in in the first place. The car scene. We have every type of scene you could want here. Asian Tuners, Rat Rods, Old School Lowriders, Motorcycles, lifted trucks, domestic car clubs, etc. etc. There's events throughout the year and sometimes every single weekend for a month or two straight. We don't really have a "down season" other than self-imposed ones to give us time to work on our cars before the next big show.
- Weather. It's spring 95% of the year. January? Pfft, windows down and t-shirt + shorts are on.
- Want to go to the beach, sand dunes and snow boarding in the same day? All doable, regardless of season.
- The food! We have such a wide variety of food available to us in all areas. Authentic asian, mexican, indian, greek, etc.
- Driving Roads. We have Angeles Crest Highway, Azusa Canyon Road, Glendora Mountain Road, etc. All roads with twists and perfect for a cruise.
- Dragstrips. We have 2 in LA area that are always poppin' off. Irwindale (1/8) and Fontana Speedway (1/4).
- Auto-Cross/Time Attack Tracks. Willow Springs Intl. Speedway, Chuckwalla, Buttonwillow, Laguna Seca, etc. etc. We've got it.
- Fast Shipping on Car Parts. A lot of part manufacturers are in California. As a result, you get incredibly fast shipping without having to pay extra.
I don't think you'll have a shortage of car things to do here. There's a reason people say the West Coast is where the real car scene is.
