How can Hyundai get it so right, and Honda so wrong?

You attacked a R owner for voicing their opinion. Otherwise, I could give a shit what you have to say.
You mean like you did me twice now? When obviously no one here is agreeing with any post you make? I have had an R since first week of release. As for your comment that the veloster has active exaust fet 30k. Well yeah when the rest of the car is cheap crap. But on the R would have pushed it closer to 40 like I said. With that and all the other stuff people want. Also yes I would take a Tesla on the track. That car is stomping others left and right on the drag track. You can have your loud, tuned look at me car. Means nothing when you are always losing.
Almost daily I get big loud look at me, small d@&% tuned car owners trying to stop light race. Warms my heart when my embarrassingly quiet vacuum leaves thier visceral tuned sound driving asses in the rear view. Maybe instead of spending 2 to 3 k on sound they spent it on performance thier girlfriend wouldn't be in my car. Lol....

Is this based on personal experience, or just going with what C&D, R&T, and Youtube influencers have said? Just curious, not a criticism.
Not going by any of that. Based on the rest of the veloster line. The cars are horrid and built cheap. I doubt the N is any real step up. Admitantly I have not seen one. But seeing how honda and everyone else makes the cars similar from trim to trim ( the R and the sport touring for example are not material wise much different and built on same assembly line) it's safe to say the veloster N is not much different material wise from the regular veloster.

The N platforms are different in that Hyundai is developing from the ground up. It's not just a few performance bits, seats and a motor. The entire package gets designed in parallel with the base Veloster/Elantra/i30. And it's only the 2nd offering from Albert Biermann since taking over Hyundai's performance lineup (after spearheading BMW's M division).

Early reviews say that it's no CTR. But all agree that the chassis, suspension and powertrain are huge improvements from previous GT/Sport trims. And a solid contender in the 29-31K range.

CN: A lot of car for around 30K.

I am a fan of and own a Type-R.

However regarding the N, they were not targeting the R. They were targeting making the platform perform better and driving excitement. Whether or not that made the car faster than the R was not a concern. Much like the Miata, Mazda could care less about overly stiff suspension and high horsepower.

These guys are a hoot....and their Canadian EH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comparing the Veloster N with the Type R.
I like these guys, but in no way shape or form is the Hyuandai N even remotely close to the Type r. They lost all credibility when they compared it to the type R. I have seen the type R completely demolish this car on the track by over 6 seconds, and after driving the N for half the day all I wanted to do is jump out of the car and drive my CTR. Fake pops and crackles dont mean jack when the driving experience is crap.

These guys also praised the 370z power and performance, I own a 370 with a Revup tune and a car with 270 torque is abysmal. I gave the car to my mother and she also complains about the lack of torque.

At a time when fun-to-drive manual transmission cars are getting drowned out by an ocean of SUVs and the majority of auto makers are striving to make the future to be AVs and EVs, I'm glad that Hyundai is making the Veloster N. I'm not a Hyundai fanboy, but I have to give them credit where it's due. At least they're sticking with cars, unlike GM and Ford.

Also, I've got so much respect for Albert Biermann. After driving a few of the M3 models that he was responsible for as BMW's chief technical engineer for chassis dynamics, I know that it's BMW's loss and Hyundai's gain.

I disagree. I think Hyundai absolutely was targeting the Type-R when they developed the Veloster N. However, now that they’ve come up short and realized it’s not that easy to produce a car that performs like the Type-R for a reasonable price, they say “It’s not about the lap times. It’s about making the car fun to drive.”. Yeah right.

As far as the exhaust sound goes, I changed my rear motor mount to the stiffer Hasport 70A model, and believe it or not, the car sounds much better and more aggressive in the cabin now. I’m sure it probably sounds the same outside the car, but I’m in the driver’s seat and it sounds great to me.

They knew they weren’t coming close. It has been mentioned that half of the manifest on the type-r weren’t even allowed. The price target always existed, plus on and aged platform means they’d st least put in a good effort. That’s why they could never target the R. Now maybe next gen would be a sight to behold, but we’ll see. Not that I’d care, I’ll still have my Type-R.

A rear motor mount is not the first thing people reach for when desiring to modify the sound of a car.

And I never had any problems with the sound of the R. Love it the way it is.

I realize that. That is why I shared my experience of a rear motor mount changing the interior sound of the car.

I think Biermann and his fellow former BMW colleagues are simply taking a page from their former employer's playbook. BMW has long developed market niches by making cars that no one else was making at the time. Smart. So, with the Veloster N, Biermann and his team are making a market niche between the Si and Type R as well as the GTI and Golf R, just to name to automakers.

I'm seriously considering the Veloster N. The i30N has received glowing reviews overseas, and in some parts, it's sold out (Australia), which is unheard of for a Hyundai vehicle. The Veloster having a little bit more power, and being lighter, will be a better version of the two. I can't believe the amount of features the Veloster comes with. It's like a tuner's dream!
