Is this a slipping clutch? What is my next move?

I thought I had an idea.
lol The 1.5T's clutch is just barely adequate to harness its power in stock form. It's simply too weak to transmit any significant torque increase available from increased boost... It's not ruined from abuse. It's just not up to handling all the power.

My clutch held great with PRL Front/Downpipe Combo and a custom Tune from Vit. If all you’re running is the tuner, I’m frankly surprised you’re slipping. I now have additional mods and have since upgraded to FX350, but the stock clutch is not as bad as some of you are making it out to be.

If it were me and you aren’t planning on doing additional mods anytime soon. Flash back to stock and take it to the dealer, there is no harm in trying to get them to do it and it is possible your clutch is faulty. (Parts fail all the time)

These are my opinions and I don’t want to argue with anyone, I’m speaking from experience and giving the OP my two cents.

Agree with you.

If he blew his clutch just off a BASE tune and not even a stage 1. I suspect a faulty clutch or a faulty driver. I hear stock MTs drivers are ruining the clutch. So driver error seems more likely.

Ive read ENDLESS people reporting no clutch slippage on Tune ans Modified 10th gens.

How do you drive to ruin clutch after 15k ?

All my last 3 cars with MT never need a new clutch and I sell those car with more than 150K
Because he has been repeatedly punching it in gears 4-6. Some people just don't understand why they should downshift.

When you’re going 70, and you want to downshift, what gear do you downshift to? It’s 5th for me. Are you saying that’s wrong?

Depends how much throttle you are going to give it. Just leaning on the pedal and getting 4 psi or under, downshift to 5th. If you intend on pushing harder and getting up to 15psi, downshift to 4th. If you are planning on seeing over 16psi, I would downshift to 3rd for a moment, shifting into 4th at 6-6.5k. 3rd tops out around 88mph(youre going to see some serious shit), and 4th tops out around 117mph.

While shifting does lose speed/momentum for a moment the increased accelleration available in a lower gear is worth it IMHO. I feel bad for the people driving on the stock tune as the aftermarket tunes really wake up the car all over the rpms. However from what I have seen with every other turbo car I have owned, the stock boost is always conservative (WRX, EVOX, Cooper S).

Jeez, I always assumed I was driving it hard when I downshifted to 5th on the highway to get it up to 90. I have never really considered going under 5th gear if I'm already driving above 70.

Well, anyway, as an experiment, I did downshift to 4th at 65 MPH, and the clutch still slipped. Perhaps my clutch is weaker than average...or I have abused it too much. Either way, seems I do need an upgrade.

Stock? Mods? Tuned?

I can tell you my Si has over 18k miles and the only mod is the PRL intake hose and a drop in filter. With every map I have used, never felt any slipping. But I also never get on it in the higher gears. Those gears are for cruising and fuel economy. Sounds like you may have partially glazed your flywheel or significantly worn your clutch.

Thanks for humoring my questions.

I've driven manual for 22 years - but this is my first car with any sort of power, so it has been an adjustment and learning experience.

So, it's only got a mild flash using my Ktuner - I think 23PSI on Sport Mode. Since I was last here, I've tried downshifting to 3rd instead of 4th or 5th. I get the same boost of power, no slippage.

If I only slip in 4-6, and only when I gun it, does that mean my clutch is fine? If it were a really bad clutch, would it be slipping in 3rd too?

Thanks!

Don't gun it in 4th or above would be my quick answer. Downshift to second or third depending on how fast you are going. What rpms are you at in 4th when you "gun it"? When you say gun it do you mean WOT aka flooring it?

Sometimes WOT, sometimes only about 1/2, but pushing the gas fast. Only above 3000 RPM. Slips real bad between 3-5000RPM in 4th.

Try stabbing the pedal in 4th gear at 5k compared to 4k. Do the same in 3rd and 2nd gear. Avoid mashing throttle at 3k if you suspect the clutch is slipping.

I am not a mechanic. Just a guy who has owned a few very different cars and modded about half of them. Experience teaches hard lessons. I try to give good advice.
