Hello,

I'm new to the forums and own a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback EX. I'm curious to what everyone uses for their oil changes. I bought my car at 14K miles and did my change at 20K with LiquiMoly oil and their Ceratec additive (almost as much $ as all the oil) and have noticed a gain of 1-2 MPG. The reason I used LiquiMoly is because I worked at Sema with the Liqui staff and heard from not only employees, but the many mechanics and other by standers that praised LiquiMoly.

imo wear is usually from cold start and short drives. so I grab oil that is best protection on cold start but even then, that oil is probably better at protection when engine is warm too. Eneos Racing Oil and Amsoil Signature Series are my two top choice. I also changed my transmission fluid with amsoil and it's definitely better at cold shift.

Whatever Honda puts in it since my oil changes are free.

Well, my logic is that Honda... who's the world's largest engine manufacturer... probably knows what's best for the engine they designed and assembled. And since I bought the car new from them, I've got free oil changes. Why would I spend the time and money to do it myself when I get the guys that built the thing do it for free? I hardly call that "living dangerously".

It was more about trusting the low-paid lube techs at a dealership to do the job correctly. There have been stories of dealership techs not tightening oil filters, dumping oil and starving motors. My friend even works as a tech supervisor for Honda and he said that it's not that uncommon for it to happen. I trust myself more than someone else doing it.

I hear you, and agree as I've heard the horror stories too. But trust me, if I took my Civic Si to Honda to have them change the oil and had some sort of oil-related issues due to their negligence, it will become Mike's Honda if they don't make me whole.

dealers don't have anything to do with the manufacturer. most dealers are independently owned and operated. the only thing they care about is profit. so their incentive is to do your oil change as cheap as they possibly can. cheapest oil, cheapest filter, and some kid doing it who may or may not know what he's doing. your "free" oil change costs your dealer maybe ten bucks, at most. It's a shit oil change.

I am not sure that's a fair statement. They are Honda certified technicians, you can specify what type of oil you want them to use. Your profit example literally applies to every business, every business cares about profit. Do you think Honda doesn't try to find the cheapest possible materials to build cars? Some maintenance departments have really good ratings, which tells me that some actually care about keeping customers satisfied. Again, I am not denying the existence of crappy dealers, there are plenty.

I use 0w20. Beyond that I don't care what brand I use except I won't buy the house brand stuff at Rural King.

I would use Super Tech oil from Walmart.

So far I've only used Pennzoil and Mobil 1 in the '16 Civic because both oils have had $10 and $12 rebates which makes them very price competitive. Brand name oils at a very attractive price.
