the way it sits works out really well. the plexi is sunken and is 1/8" lower than top side of folding floor lid with full cutout. the top of the stainless steel finishing caps of the standoffs are actually 1/8" higher than the plexi so are flushed with top side of folding floor lid.

the trunk liner has partial centered cutout for a simple reason - i'm ocd and can't stand an off-center cutout. therefore the bottom of the trunk liner covering the plexi sits on top of the finishing caps. the removable/reusable trunk liner cutout as a "cap" sits on top of the 4 finishing caps in that partial yet centered cutout.

everything is flushed with each other per layer. therefore, under the tray liner and only the area right above the plexi is covered with black velvet sticky back material which is soft and "absorbs or cushions" any particles or sand that could scratch the plex when covered.
That's excellent! OCD?...yeah. ..I get accused of that all of the time too...but really, I just think it's about doing stuff right and with a good amount of effort! In my opinion?...don't ever change that! I don't think we have enough of that in the world today! ...nice attention to detail!

Ok just did an SPL test with meter in front passenger footwell at volume 35 of 40 and JL bass remote control knob on max. Played test tracks Tiësto’s “Boom” and The Knife’s “Silent Shout”, and I got 116.1 dB wow! Damn good from the setup of stock amp driving all JL C2 speakers and JL mono amp driving the W3V3 8” sub.

If you wanted to see even more out of it (just for maximum SPL) you could try 2-3 second burps (play/pause quickly) using a test cd with sine waves (square waves if you could find one with em)...Probably somewhere between 45-65hz

Excellent! And that is where it usually tends to be the loudest! We built an SPL focused car once and it did 158.1 in that location. Thanks again!

i used a 50 hz 0 db sound file on the jl amp to do the tuning for blend and clipping.

158.1 dp for spl is deadly.

here's a tip on quick disconnects and how i can take my entire foam tray with the full display intact in no more than 2 mins max. this also allow ALL my wires to be hidden behind the trunk panels and unseen when the foam tray is taken out. following are all quick connect/disconnects and only wires coming into/from the foam tray (shown earlier with wire management routes underneath).

1) main 8 gauge power and negative cables - use the red quick connect/disconnect shown in the pic with (+) going to ds18 power distribution input and (-) going into the jl amp's ground input.
2) jl bass remote control - uses a simple black rj11 phone cable coupler.
3) speaker wires from stock sub signal into lc2i - waterproof shrink wrap spade plugs.
4) speaker wires from jl amp to the stock sub enclosure - waterproof shrink wrap spade plugs.

so 4 quick connects/disconnects to plug/unplug for track days or maintenance if needed...under 2 mins, and the entire tray comes out in one piece.

Here you go...all clean and hidden, literally zero wires seen after tray assembly removed. The 4 quick connections I mentioned are located behind the rear plastic panel (takes 5 seconds to remove or reinstall) at red circles...all Tesa fleece taped, and zip tied.

Put tray in then connect power-ground, sub out, sub in, and RJ11 to coupler. Reinstall rear plastic panel...voila!

How involved is it to put that sound skin on? Also does it help with the exhaust drone during interstate driving.

Tip for tuning amp properly. It’s best to have a digital AC voltage meter with double digit range. I found that you don’t need to tune the LC2i first then the amp (my case is JL XD600/1v2 amp). The LC2i should be set according BEFORE you take voltage readings at the amp’s speaker level sub output.

The following tips allow you to control your bass contour from the head unit and amp remote (if you have one) accordingly for more flexibility and proper blending with the rest of the car’s speakers.

Find your amp’s proper input voltage for it’s rated RMS power at the specified or sub’s impedance. Ex: If your amp’s factory test shows 400W RMS into 4 ohms load, then it’s 40V input voltage required. You can also use this formula:

Square Root of (RMS power x Impedance) = Input Voltage Required

Follow in order.

1) If you have and LC2i, set the Accubass Threshold to max and all top 3 dials at 12 o’clock or center click. Keep line/low level output connected and other end connected to amp’s line/low level input.

2) Turn all sound settings and surround sound to neutral or off.

3) Turn amp’s remote to max (full clockwise) if you have one. This is so that once you’ve set the proper input sensitivity for the amp the remote’s knob at max will also be tuned to max volume with moderate clipping for protection.

4) Unplug sub speaker level output from amp.

5) Turn HU volume up to 30 of 40.

6) Play 40 Hz sine wave with 0 db (for Rockford Fosgate amps) or 50 Hz sine wave with 0 db (for JL amps).

7) Turn the amp’s input senstivity to the desired level. In the example above and in my case with the JL XD600/1v2, its 400W RMS and 4 ohms (JL W3v3 8” sub) load, so my target AC voltage meter reading is 40.00V. Reading is taken at the amp’s sub speaker leaves + and - connections (what the sub sees).

8) When the proper voltage reading is achieved, turn down the volume to 0 and plug the sub speaker level output from amp back in.

If the blend of the sub’s bass seems odd or overpowering vs the main speakers, turn DOWN the input sensitivity at the amp NOT UP a little at a time until you hear a nice blend.

NOTE: Most remote controls for the amps are just a bass level output (or volume) and not true input sensitivity level control.

Enjoy!

It’s not bad, just takes time and patience and HIGHLY recommend the proven and reliable Dynamat classic roller with hard rubber roll and wooden handle. Took me 8 hours, but those who know me know I’m highly OCD.

It’s very hard if you want all the lettering/logos to align which I wanted to do. Best to do things is smaller sections than try to lay it down in big pieces due to odd shapes.

Save and maximize ALL little pieces since you’ll use them to patch up areas for a clean install. You can do it all on a good weekend day.

Result is amazing! I cut down road noises by about 40% since the stock trunk had zero sound deadening to begin with not to mention nothing to cover the trunk but the retractable fabric. Exhaust sounds cut down by about 25-30% so if you have droning it will definitely help. It also tightens up the exhaust sound and narrows the low frequencies of the exhaust.

If you can, it’s a must do and simply astounding and so enjoyable on drives.

Is the foam baffle needed?
it's not needed but definitely helps in directing the front sounds and eliminates back wave losses going into la la land.

Looking for some advise for an audio novice as myself.
Would it be ok if I use 3 ohm 6.5" speakers, 60W RMS, 180W peak, in the 4 doors with the stock headunit?
Or should I just shop around for 4ohm only, like these Focal RCX-165?
