Has anyone figured out how to get Google Assistant to work on the head unit itself? When I use Google Assistant (via Android Auto) to play a YouTube video, Google Assistant says it can't play youtube videos when using Android Auto.

If I try to install Google Assistant on the head unit itself (via Google Play), it says "This version is not compatible with your device".

Currently, I have to manually type the name of the video I want in the YouTube app itself on the head unit. It would be great to be able to just press the button on my Steering wheel and say, "Play Nicki Minaj videos".

Maybe someone has figured out a clever work-around or alternate method?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I run John's SNES Emulator on my head-unit while using a USB SNES Controller to play games while waiting for my son's school to get out.

Haha no need to do that in Australia, we have HDMI input in our civics, I have a SNES tucked away in the centre console.

Bluetooth gamepads or OBD2 scanners will not work with this head unit. Wifi obd2 will work and wired/wifi gamepads will work. see my post above.
Even old versions of Android support USB 2.0 Bluetooth dongles; and, can co-exist with the head unit's existing internal Bluetooth (dedicated for other stuff). Bluetooth Android wireless gamepads should work just fine. I'm actually looking forward to trying this very soon. Sounds a lot more appealing to me than having wires dangling out while playing.

If you install apkpure I believe you have the option of installing the real YouTube app, or go to APK mirror and look for compatible Android version of YouTube, I think only reason he choose the lite version is because it will run faster!
I tried to do the install of YouTube and it says it won't play without Google Play Services which isn't supported on that device

I have downloaded Waze and YouTube, installed them and neither work correctly. YouTube needs Google Play Services and Waze doesn't show the maps onscreen. Does anyone know how to DELETE and unwanted app?

You need to install a APP Manager.

Last time I was messing with Honda Hack (about 3 months ago), the developer was warning against installing Google Play Services. Recommended you get whatever APKs you want (ideally correct version for the older HU OS), and install them from USB.
last thing you want is your Honda Hacked HU talking to Google Play Services, and bogging down, and trying to update stuff you don't want.

I think that might have been before the most recent version of Honda Hack was released; which now offers the Google Play Services in its built-in list of online downloads. I don't disable auto-updates (even though that's definitely an option) since there are only a few apps that I've installed through it (latest version of YouTube, Plex, and Netflix). If there's an app that's incompatible with the HU's OS version and/or hardware, Google Play will say it's not compatible with the device. Most apps I've tested work surprisingly well from Google Play.. at least on my Honda Civic Sport 2019.

Another thing to note... when I first installed Honda hack and the YouTube app (from the builtin list of online downloads) and the waze app, the apps didn't work correctly. The apps were extremely sluggish or hang on a black screen... eventually showing the "app is not responding" message. This is even before I installed Google Play Services. I was able to fix this by running the "optimize" feature in Honda Hack... clearing app caches and data and reboot the HU. This fixed this issue right away. I hope this helps.

Thanks .. I need to get back into this after Christmas.

I have a couple of 2018 Infotainment system currently broken down & disassembled, waiting on some time for a full review of the unit, with internal photos, and a technical analysis if exactly what is in this unit, and why it is so much more customized for the Honda than any other non Honda Unit.

The head unit just seems so slow. I've added a bunch of apps but it's practically unusable. When I go into Google Settings, it's pretty quick. I wonder how much of it is just the launcher they have on there. Has anyone tried to install an older version of Nova launcher or something?

This guy over on XDA figured out how to get his unit to run fast. I haven't tried it, it's definitely dangerous messing around with some of these things but if you're confident you can follow his instructions exactly it might be worth a shot. There is a risk of bricking your unit. You have been warned.

Best to wait till the Honda Hack Guy incorporates it into Honda Hack as a script you can run. You do not want to risk a typo !!

Man, I'd love to use these tweaks on my headunit. These modifications look relatively simple to do in both Root Explorer and Kernel Adiutor. However, I'd rather apply a script to do this instead of doing it manually (much less chance for things to go wrong). I'm really hoping @codeage will be able to make these tweaks available as a "Performance" option setting in the next Honda Hack update. Thanks so much for sharing. I'll be following both this thread and the XDA thread to see when we might get the next Honda Hack update with these performance tweaks.

So I installed Nova Launcher today. It ran a lot faster, but was a little unstable. Also I couldn't get any of the shortcuts back. Had to uninstall.
