I am completely annoyed by people who pit the Focus RS against the Type R. Why are we comparing FWD vs AWD?

The Type R is in it's own category - top of the line FWD car.

The Focus RS should be compared to other AWD cars like the Subaru WRX STI

Oranges and apples comparisons are really dumb.

Change my mind.

The Focus RS is also 5k more than the Type R.

They are turbocharged practical 4-doors that are about the same size and offer comparable performance for comparable prices. They are about as close as you can get.

Should an S3 not be compared to an M2? Should a Lotus not be compared to a 911 because the engine isn't in the same place?

Also, to drive an AWD car fast you end up driving it more like a FWD car in most situations than a RWD car.

I think it's denigrating to the Civic to say it's not in the same class.

They are both turbocharged 4 cyl hatchbacks created for the sole purpose of performance, if a buyer is looking at a R they are most likely cross shopping with an RS unless they are already set on the Honda. That is exactly why they are extremely comparable, AWD is a difference but its just a difference, doesn't mean their not comparable. Its like saying you cant compare a v6 dodge charger sedan to a chevy impala because one is RWD and one is FWD, doesnt matter because they are both full size sedans that people will cross shop.

If I still live in Denver I would take the RS, since I'm moving to Hawaii, I'm buying the CTR.

They're both extreme inplementations of the "hot hatch" concept and absolutely are comparable. AWD vs FWD is a significant difference, sure, but not so much that the cars are in different classes. Is an AWD BMW 3 series in a different class than a RWD one? Absolutely not.

I get the CTR is hot hatch, everyone I look at it I can’t see the hatch in it more like sedan or fastback. Probably because of the spoiler.

I have the CTR, it is SLOW from a dead stop, but once it gets to 3rd gear it is like a missile. RS is faster from stop because of AWD but will loose to the CTR from rolling because it is much heavier. I daily my CTR it has so much space and so comfortable. I like the RS and I think it is special. It just feels more raw, with rock hard suspension and popcorn exhaust. It's like I have the PS4 but I want to play forza too.

MSRP wise, yes the RS is $5k more, but in reality the CTR is the same price of $5k more.

It’s simple if you plan on modding and want traction the RS is the obvious choice. If you want to roll race the CTR is your choice.

As far as “CTR beats it around the track” well that depends on the Track.

Remember that the RS is also on an old platform while the CTR is in it’s infancy.

Both have issues, CTR with the tranny and RS with the HG(hopefully resolved).

Either one is a great choice

I get where you are coming from. What drives me crazy is when it gets compared to the Golf R. It really should be compared to the GTI. The GTI costs a little more than the type R when it is comparably equipped (Nav, LSD, premium wheels...). They are both mid 30k hatchbacks, 4 cyl turbo, and FWD.

I agree with other folks here, that the STI, CTR, and Golf R are the triumvirate of very quick, usable hatchbacks (or 4 doors). They all get their performance is different ways, but I really see all of them as part of the same club.

Not to nitpick but the RS had ADMs too. Not sure that since the RS is going away so is the ADM or if it's worse now.

CTR's real competitors are not sold here in NA market. No megane RS trophy, No GTI CS, No Cupra. So the closest ones to the typeR in terms of specs and pricing are the AWD hot hatches.
