Hi All, I’m a new 2018 civic SI owner. I feel pretty stupid right now. I was getting ready to back out of a parking space this morning and without thinking put the gear lever into reverse without the clutch in. My right foot was on the brake so it didn’t move, but made a noise and the engine stalled. Is it possible to have damaged anything from this? Reverse is not synchronized, does this impact anything?

How hard did you have to push the stick to get it into gear?
I have accidentally tried to put the stick into reverse on my previous car before the clutch was fully pushed in, and I heard a loud grind and encountered significant resistance - then I immediately pulled the stick back into reverse. I'm surprised you managed to push it all the way into gear and stall the engine.

Hello. No, you are alright. I have done this in the past with other cars, as long as you don't do it often. A couple of weeks ago I accidentally shifted into third before fully depressing the clutch....the grinding from the gearbox was unpleasant, to say the least!

It was maybe a little harder then normal, but it happened so fast the car had stalled before I realized what had happened. It basically just went into gear.

Thank you, yes not planning on doing it again. It’s just unpleasant messing up a basic operation like that.

Very interesting. I'm surprised it went into gear. But as others have said, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Just try to keep these occurrences seldom is all. I have yet to grind a gear in my Si yet, and I am dreading the screeching sound that will happen when I do.

I am surprised as well. If I had had major resistance and grind I definitely would have stopped and realized before putting it in gear. This is my first manual vehicle, and thus far I have been very careful about doing everything correctly. Shifting slowly to the correct gear, rev matching downshifts, never riding the clutch etc. With increased comfort and confidence comes the risk of doing something stupid without thinking I suppose. Definitely going to be even more careful now.

Stalling and grinding gears is normal every once in a while, it happens. I had my 8th gen Si for 9 years and I've grinded the gears occasionally and stalled a handful of times. The car still runs perfectly with a butter smooth transmission.

Also, you can actually shift a car with no clutch at all, obviously not recommended as it is a lot more wear on the transmission, but if the rpm\speed is perfect, the car can shift without grinding or much resistance. Like how you can move your shifter while the car is off with no clutch. So no, you didn't damage anything much

I ground my gears countless times in my 6th gen. Sold it with over 170k miles, never changed the transmission fluid. Never had a problem with it. If the new Civic transmissions are anything like the old one you don't have anything to worry about.

They aren't anything like the old one's lol. Quiet a few of people have wrecked their tranny's already and most have synchro issues with 2nd and 3rd gear

Agreed, one my friends purchased a 2009 tsx 6speed and the trans syncros have the classic grind in 3rd gear, after i looked into it and found all the rsx information i was dumbfounded lol Sucks! Side note i will be keeping my fluid changed on a regular basis as i would anyways.

As the old saying goes, if you can’t find em, grind em lol. Don’t worry these civics are made tough.
