Hey everyone,

Went to my local mechanic for an oil change, and my mechanic pointed out a severe rust problem underneath the car. I've attached pictures taken from different angles.

I've only had the car (2017 Honda Civic Sport Touring) for a year and one month. Currently at 23,006 kms. The rust is horrible! It has really corroded. I touched the rust and it disintegrates as I touch it.

Mechanic had said to bring it to the Honda dealer where I bought the car and tell them about this problem.

The rust is located right beside the oil filter. I don't know what this area or part is called. This area is usually covered by some metal panelwhich means that it is protected from salt in the winter. The rusty part isn't exposed because of this metal panel.

I need advice on what to do. Could you guys tell me the name of the section or part that has the rust? And what I should do when I go to the dealer. I don't like going to the dealer.

It's called an exhaust and they all look like that if they've been exposed to salt.
Pretty much this. OEMs all use mild steel for exhaust systems and they all end up looking like this when exposed to salt. That said... take it to the dealer... they may or may not help you out under warranty. My guess is not. You could always get a stainless exhaust system... that would prevent this from happening.

Always kills me to see rust happen on cars, especially here in NH. But totally normal, just sucks to see it happen so soon.

We have a 5 year unlimited mile corrosion limited warranty so this may fall under that. You'd have to ask the dealer.

That is for the body.. not an item like the exhaust.

Cheap steel exhaust. Bummer too.. I had my 2005.5 jetta for 12 years with the original stainless exhaust. Save a penny here.. another there.. suddenly you have a $16K car ;)

Rust doesn't even need salt, just heat. Hence rusty exhausts. It does need moisture yeah but heat accelerates oxidation the same as salt does

Look under any vehicle that didn't just roll off of the production line and chances are you'll find that "rusty" exhaust. Its nothing uncommon and as long as the rest of the underside isnt rusting theres nothing to worry about.

Also, any recommendations on where I can order this part (exhaust), should I invest in stainless? Or just get aftermarket and rustproof?

IMO it is just a surface rust, leave it there.

I read you have a mechanic ?
