Is this normal?

Anytime I leave my phone connected via the cord and turn my car off, when I turn it back on CarPlay doesn’t load. I need to disconnect the cord and plug right back in. This isn’t a problem 95% of the time, but occasionally I don’t disconnect my phone.

Anyway to correct this or is this normal behavior?

If I connect my phone by cable when getting in it works every time. Only happens when I turn the car off with the phone connected by cable and then start the car with the phone cable connected

“No Device Connected” for me. Although maybe 1 out of 10 times it works for me.

Not a new problem (for me at least.) I have had various CarPlay problems since iOS 10.

My car used to do something like this until I switched to the original Apple Cable that came with my phone. Ever since then, I literally never have an issue connecting my phone to CarPlay.

I need to try this (again.)

Back when iOS 10 came out I tried all kinds of things, including multiple cables, to resolve all the CarPlay issues I had. I am using a black Amazon cable now only because it matches my black interior.

I am 100% certain I am using the cable that came with my iPhone 8 Plus. I can try a different cable though to see what happens.

It could be the new iOS's security settings that are intended to keep the phone from connecting to another device without your authorization. Unlocking it with TouchID or FaceID might help make sure it connects.

If you haven't solved this problem. all you have to do is hit the audio/power button on the head unit untill is asks if you want to reboot, and click yes.

When it reboots carplay/android auto will work fine. The head unit isn't clearing out the memory like it should -- i think is the problem.

I reboot mine ever month, or whenever it starts to act up.

You need to unlock the phone first before restarting the car. I'm almost sure that this will solve your issue. It did for me and now CarPlay connects all of the time. You shouldn't have to disconnect the cable all of the time.

This is probably it. And, if you hadn't unlocked the phone first, it's probably waiting for you to unlock it before it'll allow the HU to connect to it. Check the phone's screen and see if it says something like, "You need to unlock your iPhone to use USB accessories."

Go to settings/general/CarPlay

Make sure the allow while locked toggle is green.

Had no idea it had that setting. I mostly stopped fiddling with that screen when I realized I can't name the car (both my Civic and my wife's CR-V say "HONDA" on the settings screen).

I’ll give this a try, although when I plug my phone in when I first get in the car I never unlock it and it connects fine.

Youll also want to make sure you allow USB Accesories when locked in FaceID / Passcode settings.

So Settings > FaceID/(TouchID)/ Passcode > Allow Access When Locked > USB accessories.

Without it the iPhone rejects all attempts at usb connections after an hour as a security measure.

Also, make sure that you have the audio software update that came out last summer/fall. It solved, among other things, CarPlay connection issues for me. There is a service bulletin for that, and I wrote a post about it along with the bulletin number. Ask your dealer - describe the problem specifically, and don’t just ask for the update. They need to write up a problem you are experiencing to justifiy the correction with the update, or so I was told.
