Hey,

I was a proud owner of the 17' Civic Hatchback LX, now I kinda seem to be regretting my purchase. I've had a few minor issues and already had the transmission replaced.

The transmission was replaced less than 5 thousand miles ago when I brought the car in about 5-6 times about the startup vibration/grinding issue, now I'm having the transmission whine like a super charger every time I go more than 60% throttle. While still having the stupid vibration/griding issue (which sounds amazing when people hear it and look at you weird)

I've searched and seen a few threads about the whining sound with no definitive answer to what is causing it, I'm tired of going to the shop just to be told its nothing or it can't be replicated. Anyone else have this going on and know what causes it?

thanks!

CVT whine is actually fairly normal, its the sound of the belt going around the pulleys kind of like how a supercharger belt makes that noise

My CVT makes the same whining noise. At first I thought the transmission was going out, but that was 20,000 miles ago. It still runs like it did when it was new and it still makes the whining noise (which sounds cool).

If your CVT sound like it's supercharged... Part out lol. Basically, your CVT is toasted. People that goes above 250TQ have broke their CVT and it sounded like supercharged.

proof? or are you just saying what you heard 3rd hand? CVTs sound like a small supercharger because of the belt going around the pulley.....kind of like....a supercharger. My accord sounded like that and never had it go out. My civic sounds like that now. And I can tell you Ive heard what a cvt going out sounds like, and its not a supercharger, its lots of shaking and stalling. Ask any tech who has seen a bad one come in

keep going, and the whine people are talking about is not the whine in that video for gods sake. Every cvt has a whine to it

There is a very clear difference between a supercharger whining sound and a NORMAL CVT whine. If your CVT sounds anything like a Supercharger that is in no way normal and there is definitely something wrong. Every CVT has somewhat of a whine though because that is just the way they are made so keep that in mind. If you can, record the CVT making the sound in your car, might be able to give you a better idea of whether it is actually an issue or not.

No doubt, it is louder than the whine I've heard in the past and only then I only heard it when the transmission had been under load or may have been warmer. This happens now when it's cold and getting up to operating temp.

Without hearing it, I cant say for sure but from everything you're describing I would bring it in asap so nothing goes terribly wrong.

Take temperatures and driving style/conditions out as much as is non-laboratory possible. Drive around casually for a bit until the car is at operating temperatures and the lowest idle rpm is active when coming to a stop at lights. Then drive around in 'L.'

Outside of capturing any sound... Has the car always made this sound? Does it begin, or does it only occur within a single or series of RPM Bands? Does the tone change with respect to tire speed, engine speed, transmission load? Have you replaced or upgraded any hosing, wiring, or ducting under the hood, snagged on something around the filter air box or felt something give/break awkwardly while performing air box and/or filter maintenance? Is there associated vibration or shuddering? Does it change? If you have a tuner or other device to read the current gear setting of the CVT (1-5), is there any association with the gear setting and the sound? Have you checked the CVT Fluid fill/spill port for fluid level, and extracted a bit to sniff and take a gander at the color?

I wonder what's causing the whine noise, I mean some Civic CVTs are loud and annoying, others just have a very soft whine and some others, like my CVT, are having absolutely no whining at all.

Did you guys already get the CVT fluid replaced? Did the CVT whine went away after that?
