Hello! I am new to the group and was reading this thread about the dealers. I have a little information about Schomp Honda, located in Highlands Ranch, CO. I am working with a client advisor. There is a list, it is a $500 refundable deposit to be put onto the list and that also goes towards the car. They also take down your top 2 color choices. How their list works is if you're next and you want let's say, a white or a black one and the one that comes in is red, you can pass and let the next person below you decide if they want it. You stay at the top of the list until the color you want comes in. I did contact Planet Honda and Honda of Greeley and two reps from the latter dealer told me two different things, either way it was still first come first served. I was also told from Schomp there is an 18month wait period as of right now but that could change if people drop from the list. I don't know if this helps but figured I'd put in my two cents about Schomp. I'm happy with the service so far. I am able to text my rep if I have any questions and she has been great about it (of course, they're trying to make a sale) but I didn't have any issues compared to the other two dealers. I don't know if that is how the lists work at other dealers, if it's similar or not.
Schomp Honda is a good dealer and they told me no ad on accessories or mark up. Only catch is the waitlist is 2 years.

Yep! 18 months. And if those other people on the list are as determined as I am they won't be dropping off the list. And I don't blame them! I do think I remember my rep telling me it could be longer, so yeah 2 years lol I'm willing to wait. Gives me time to save and get a bigger down payment! :)

Yes, things are different on the East Coast, but there were no waiting lists, etc. for most of the stories that I have heard. Mostly it has been 1)notice that a car is in transit or on the lot; and 2) buy car. I just took the time to do a quick search for the 16 dealerships closest to Denver (not sure where in Colorado you are). There are 7 Type R's in transit to 6 different dealerships. If I was looking, I'd be calling each one of them now and seeing what they say about prices, deposits, etc. Don't pin yourself to one dealership.

Great advice, thank you! I did some researching before even contacting any dealer, I contacted a handful and out of those Schomp was the best. I am in Northern CO, and Schomp is a little over an hour away from me. So I am willing to travel a little bit. The hunt now is to try and find a dealer that would be as good as Schomp or better. Hmm how did you figure out how many were in transit? That is incredibly helpful!

I'd say a good dealer is the one that has the car in stock and sells it to you for a price you are happy with. You can always get it serviced at your dealer of choice after you own the car.

It is a pain, but I used Honda's search. From Honda's main site (automobiles.honda.com), look under "shopping tools" menu for the "search inventory" option. Then enter a zip code or city/state. This is where frustration sets in. You would hope that it might show you inventory for all dealers in your area, but no. It will show you one dealer. Then you can view the inventory for that dealer, then when looking at that dealer, you select the Type R. It will show you cars in stock, or in transit, or most commonly that they have none. Well, back where you selected the one dealer, there is an option to show more dealers. As you can see, you search 1 dealer at a time. I would bring up 10 dealers or so in new tabs, and search them all. It was truly a pain, but it paid off for me. Once you get to searching each individual dealership, you can bookmark the pages. Once I had the pages bookmarked, it was simple to bring up the browser every morning and see what is new. Once I see that a dealership has a Type R in transit, then I started with the phone calls.

I'll save you the initial search. Here are the links to dealers with cars in transit.

Oh wow thank you so much, I really appreciate that! That helps me out a ton once the 2019's are released. I will definitely use your advice on this! It helps keep the options open. :)

A couple of days ago, my buddy called Marysville Honda (Marysville, WA) and inquired about their CW type r. He asked what the price was and the salesman responded "MSRP + 20" and my friend responded "20...percent?" The salesman said "20 thousand" and my friend hung up right away. Just a scummy sales tactic. I have heard this dealership charging around $3k above MSRP, but they recently also had a black CTR with paper attached with a price of $55k after ADM. They're clearly trying to take advantage of the uninformed. Steer clear.

I'll definitely watch for that. I was told in writing they sell theirs at MSRP (I screenshot the emails juuuuust in case) with no add-ons, which I'm ok with. I am going to keep my eye out for dealers that might have a similar system going.

I am sorry, but if anybody pays over 45K for this car they are crazy!!! So many better options in that price range. Honestly over 40K per tax is absurd as well as lots better options in the 40K pre tax range... Just my opinion of course and to each their own, but no way I would have even considered it had I not found one for MSRP. Now that said if the MSRP was a little higher at 38 or so I might have still considered, but wouldn't pay over MSRP on principal. Normally you get cars under it even sporty cars like this... People stop buying them over MSRP and we will see that happen here, but I say it again I am ok with it now that I own one as it helps retain my value for sure.... haha

PNW prices are still silly. Dealers are definitely at least coming down from their 5-10k markup, but still having a markup in itself is ridiculous. I don't think it'll get better with the 2019s either, but I'm hoping.

As long as people are willing to pay over they are going to keep trying to get over. I will say with the amount of 2018's piling up when he 2019's hit 1 of 2 things is going to happen. 2018's stay marked up and dealers mark 2019's even higher OR 2019's hit and the 2018 values tank bringing the 2019's with them. I think the later will have a good chance of happened as we are seeing fewer and fewer people willing to pay markups. Time will tell and buyers have a lot more control here than they think. If buyers stop paying over they have to come down. It is basic economics... Something is only worth what somebody else is willing to pay. Dealers are in the business of making sales and when they stop the lights go out... They Type R is one of the more expensive cars they sale...

I have a few dealers with 1000 to -1500K mark up tell me that they are willing to work out a deal through their GM to earn my business. Here is my assessment of the situation.

Dealers will continue to list the car above MSRP, an idiot comes in and tell the dealers to take their money, they win.

If some the car sits on the lot and someone plays hardball with them, they might and will probably give you MSRP. I haven't got a Type-R yet but based on the amount of voicemail I've been getting from dealers after just filling out a Costco or USAA car buying the program form, I can get one at MSRP if am back in the states and try harder.

But then again, my mentality coming into buying the Type-R is that if I don't get one at MSRP or less, I won't buy one. It gives me a reason not spend 35k on a car. The thought of spending over 30k on a car makes me sick. Currently, I put my name down on the dealer interest list (through Costco and USAA) and have them contact me with their typical Email:

"We heard that you are looking for the Civic Type R. We got X on the lot and X on the way. As you may know, this is a very special car and we cannot give out the price over email, if you want to come in, my name is XXXXXXX and we are open until 9PM"

I reply telling them, I won't come in and will not pay for markup or additional accessories. A few hours later I get an email from the internet sales manager wanting to talk to me giving me a price of the car (again usually 1000-1500 mark up) ask me if I am willing to negotiate a "fair" price. I just tell them I'm currently deployed and will get back to them when I get back.

First thank you for your service.

Second I think a wait list is your best option for two main reasons. 1. Many dealers will take a $500 deposit and give you R at MSRP that hasn't arrived yet. 2. This lines up well for you as you may find one able to do it and line up with your arrival back.

I can't imagine a dealer with a R on the lot agreeing to both sell at MSRP and hold the car until you get back.
