Dunno why people freak out so much about this... Fuel dilutes oil yes.. as the oil gets used more it gets thicker and sludgy..

It is completely opposite with fuel dilution (supported by UOA)

Under this article in the comments section (http://blog.amsoil.com/new-motor-oil-specs-are-coming/) I have asked the following question:

"Hi,
Is Amsoil Signature Series (with such a high Calcium PPM number) safe to use in direct injection, turbo charged engines, like new Honda 1.5 turbo Civic?"

Here is the answer I received:

"Hi Mick,

Although calcium has quickly become known to the public as a potential promoter of LSPI, it is not the sole reason for its occurrence. Formulations contain a number of different additives that must be managed to control LSPI. That said, LSPI occurs in vehicles with a software update that will not take place until LSPI-promoting oils are cycled out of the marketplace. That said, AMSOIL Signature Series is perfectly safe to use in today’s turbocharged direct-injected engines.

Josh"

Mobil 1's AFE 0W-20 is in fact much lower in Calcium content compared to other 0W-20 and 5W-30 oils tested, by about half the average amount.

For the best protection in a 5W-30, Mobil 1's Advanced Synthetic (surprisingly much better than the Extended Performance version) ranks just behind Quaker State's Ultimate Durability 0W-20 and 5W-20.

LSPI damage: https://www.oronite.com/products/lspi.asp

The researchers used calcium (Ca), phosphorous in the form of Zinc Di-Alkyl-Dithio-Phosphate (ZnDTP), molybdenum as Molybdenum Di-Thio Carbamate (MoDTC) and phenolic antioxidants (Phenolic-AO), all in varying amounts. The testing showed that LSPI increased by three times when calcium was increased from 0.1-0.2%. This appears to be the sweet spot because increasing calcium to 0.3% didn’t increase LSPI. Molybdenum and phosphorus showed better LSPI suppression, causing LSPI to disappear completely at concentrations of 0.07% and 0.15%. The testing also indicated that LSPI occurrences dropped as detergent additives were eliminated.

Any proof that the Civic 1.5 even has this issue? I'm guessing Honda solved this. They are the engine experts.

A V6 F1 racing engine going bad for unknown reasons has nothing to do with 1.5L Turbo consumer engine in the Civic. There are at least 350K Turbo Honda's out there and there have not been any reported engine failures anywhere including this forum.
I know just wanted to rub salt on the wound :p

Hey Guys - I'm going to check with a friend who IS an "engineer" - at Royal Purple in Texas, about this issue. I've had my 2018 HB Sport Manual since Jan '18 and just did my 2nd Oil&Filter change at 5000 miles - did NOT "smell" gas in the oil. I drive mostly City and in HOT temps (Fort Lauderdale) - will let you all know what I hear from him..........personally have always changed Oil&Filter every 3000 miles in any Turbos since I owned a 93 RX-7 R1......................Larry

You shouldn't smell fuel unless you do repeated short trips. Under that scenario, the oil never reaches operating temps which in turns burns off the excess fuel/water that accumulates in the sump. Honda's MM accounts for this scenario. You can change sooner. But unless you're modded or driving outside factory parameters, about the only difference you'll see over 100K is a lighter wallet. :)

Our base of oil samples is a little light, but all say the same thing so far. Aside from a few fringe cases, Honda seems to have done their homework.

Info from a friend of mine - Engineer at Royal Purple - he said that ALL engines experience SOME Oil Dilution with Gasoline towards end of their Oil Change Cycle - and Turbo's & Supercharged engines are more prone in this issue............so............changing Oil&Filter every 3000 miles is a Wise habit - which I personally have done ever since I bought & owned a 93 RX-7 R1 Twin Turbo back in the ealry 90's
