If you have a CTR or Hatchback Touring model - both of which come with 12 channel audio system with subwoofer - you know what the challenge is when upgrading the sub itself. We've done a lot of R&D work and found a solution to improve bass performance beyond just a few limited low profile 8" subs to install in the stock enclosure. You do NOT have to have a custom heavy sub box built!
Today there are only 2 or 3 low profile 8" subs available to drop into the stock sub enclosure, which is a sealed box as we measured at 0.39 cubic feet gross volume. This limits you to ability to get even greater bass response. Also, the stock mounting depth is limited to exactly 3-5/8".
How did we solve the problem? We increased the mounting depth of the stock enclosure AND developed a grill kit that allows for more choices of 8" deeper mounting subs which have bigger magnets for better bass. Now you can use subs such as Alpine Type R or JL W3V3 8" etc. or any sub requiring about 0.30-0.35 cubic feet sealed enclosure and up to 5" mounting depth.
Note: Subs like Skar/Sundown/CT Sounds can be accommodated up to 5.5" mounting depth with special order.
We've been running Alpine Type R dual voice coil 4 ohms sub (wired to 2 ohms) and a Rockford Fosgate 969W (actual measured) amp with amazing bass performance - using this new Palindrome Labs "Deeper Sub Grill Kit" now available for all CTRs and Hatchback Touring models.
Note: Our R&D car also has all speakers (except C-pillars) upgraded to JL C2 series (center and front and rear doors' 6.5" and tweeters) all running off the stock Honda head unit and amp. We are pleased to announce the PRE-ORDER status of the deeper subwoofer (sub) solution for both the 10th Gen Civic Type R and Civic Hatchback Touring models – both come with Honda’s factory sub enclosure as part of a 12 channel/speaker audio system. As documented before in our sub R&D work, the stock sub enclosure has been limited to just a few models of low profile 8” aftermarket sub upgrades, i.e., Pioneer and Kicker. This is limited by not only the mounting depth inside the stock enclosure by the stock plastic grill as well.
VALUE: Custom sub boxes are heavy adding ~50 lbs to a track oriented car (CTR), take up trunk space and are complex to build. Our solution maintains a stealth and close to stock look, adds zero additional weight, while enabling greater bass performance improvements to the stock Honda audio system by utilizing the stock 8” sub enclosure.
Our kit solution will open up more choices in aftermarket 8” subs with larger magnets which require deeper mounting depth. This will result in greater performance and higher power handling using an additional mono amp (optional and recommended) or the stock amp. We’ve tested deeper subs with larger magnets such as Alpine’s Type R model and JL Audio’s W3V3 8”. There are many other subs from Focal, Polk, and even Skar/Sundown/CT Sounds.
SOLUTION OFFERED: We’re introducing a deeper sub grill kit which will come with the following components and options to be made available. Kit includes:
PRE-ORDER PRICING: For a limited quantity of the first 50 units, the kit above will be 20% discounted to $200.00 shipped. After the pre-order units are assigned, the MSRP price is $250.00 shipped. LED light kit is $15.00 option, and lighted on/off switch for trunk light is $10.00 option to be added when ordering.
Note: We are intending to make only a limited run of this solution since it’s just a hobby and may limit to only 250 units total to be available. That may or may not change in the near future.
RECOMMENDED SUB SPECS: To choose the right deeper sub to install with our kit, look for subs requiring about 0.30 cubic feet net volume sealed enclosure (stock enclosure measured at 0.39 cubic feet) and mounting depth 4-1/2” to 5”.

- Custom handmade black aluminum mesh sub grill
- Custom handmade 8” x 1” thick MDF black spacer with dual sided sealant tape
