I've never had an issue receiving local radio, with my stock unit or the android unit. First unit failed on me though so that was fun.

Here is a short link with my head unit setup.

Thanks for the answers and the video. Been debating moving to a phoenix or other "chinese" unit and whether or not I wanted to bypass the stock amp. Now I'll probably end up buying it for myself (but tagged from my wife) for Christmas.

There will be some learning as it is like setting up a phone for the first time. You have to find the launcher and apps that work for YOU and what you need. The first week or two was hit or miss with whether or not it was going to do what I wanted. Here are some more of what I found that worked for me:
  • YouTube music works extremely well. I downloaded a 'mix' of songs that Google thinks I would like to play when I do not have a good data connection or when my wife drives my car and doesn't want to be bothered with trying to get her phone acting as a hotspot.
  • CarWebGuru was MUCH better than the stock launcher. It is relatively easy to set up and it is very stable.
  • Start off with just a few apps on the launcher, it will make your learning easier as you will be overwhelmed with possibilities at first.
  • Remember to check the autoconnect on your bluetooth settings to eliminate most of the popups for connections.

Hey man,

Great video! I am thinking about installing something like this for my 2018 Sport Touring. I have a couple of questions:

1.) How does this head unit sound compare to the factory head unit? I have premium sound and have already installed a subwoofer and might install an amp and upgrade the speakers.
2.) I am assuming your climates controls your part of your factory head unit. If so, do they function normally with this head unit?
3.) Did you need a dash kit to install this? I am told they don't make one for the higher trim levels.
4.)Does this allow you full control over the head unit while the car is in motion (e.g. select songs without the screen being locked for safety)?

1.) How does this head unit sound compare to the factory head unit? I have premium sound and have already installed a subwoofer and might install an amp and upgrade the speakers.
  • I originally just did the head unit and was surprised how different the sound was. To me, it sounded a LOT better and made the limits of the factory sub-woofer stand out.
2.) I am assuming your climates controls your part of your factory head unit. If so, do they function normally with this head unit?
  • The climate control works just like normal. You will get a bottom 'pop-up' when you adjust OR whenever the fan speeds change.
3.) Did you need a dash kit to install this? I am told they don't make one for the higher trim levels.
  • There is no dash kit. If you look, you will see that the trim is around the head unit and looks stock. If I don't tell people, they think that it is factory.
4.)Does this allow you full control over the head unit while the car is in motion (e.g. select songs without the screen being locked for safety)?
  • You will have full control. Sometimes when I use Google assistant for a song request, it brings up YouTube instead of YouTube Music and the video is playing during my drive. There are options to enable and disable the video options while driving as well as most other options. I did buy an aftermarket TPMS for my car from Amazon as I wasn't sure if the factory TPMS (which does not give details like the aftermarket one) was working. On a side note, Google Assistant works very well, I use that for song selections, playing the news, or most anything. It really allows you to not worry about taking your hands off the wheel. I press the mute button on the steering wheel, say 'Hey Google', then un-mute and get what I want.

Sorry, I answered all your questions in your reply, but it showed up in your post.

Has anyone experienced the issue where Bluetooth stopped functioning? I have seen a few people with that issue and it was scaring me away from purchasing this head unit. Please let me know.
Had mine for 6 months never had an issue

I have owned both the older model and one of the newer models for ~6 months each. This is back when I had my LX, but I never had an issue with either of their Bluetooth functions.

I have this in my FK8, no issues and very fast compared to stock. I also did fan mod on HU to keep temps down.
