Total tragedy.
I watched the surveillance video shown on the news closely.
Getting rear ended hard enough while stopped at a red light to be pushed completely through the intersection and spun completely around.
Poor kid died of internal decapitation like Earnhardt Jr.
Driver that hit him arrested for drunk driving and likely doing twice the 40mph limit on that road at the time of impact.

I've got 32 years as a firefighter - the newer vehicle technology and construction has made a huge difference- although the newer cars show way more dramatic damage, the injuries and severity of injuries over the years has really declined. The older vehicles would hold up better but that energy was transferred to the passengers instead of being dissapated by the vehicle. But physics can't be defeated- the amount of energy here looked very high

They are both Civicx. No Accord. I guess in Canada it must be fairly common that two Civicxs would collide. I see a civicx once in a blue moon.

It doesn't seem like the fact he had worked for Uber is relevant. He would be driving anyway. Uber customers know that they will be driven by an amateur driver, and those who are not customers will encounter the same amateur drivers on the road even after Uber is gone. I never used Uber ever in my life, but I don't see any need to verbot this kind business.
CivicX's are selling like hot cakes in Canada. They're everywhere. Can't drive 2 minutes in a smaller urban center and not see one. It's selling like hot cakes for a good reason; If you're a member of this forum you know why.

This is why I check left and right when going through an intersection even if cross bound traffic will meet a yield sign..... because not everyone yields, maybe they're screwing with the phone or just hammered..... and I know how tinny the CivicX side doors are. I must say, I do feel vulnerable in the CivicX compared to the X5 I drive in the city.

The front of the Civic Touring that rear ended him hardly has any damage. It shows that the front of the car is a lot stronger than the back. Or maybe Honda skimps on the structure in the lower trims..

Careful while racing on one-lane roads while crossing the line you should not be crossing.
The result of a race between a Mercedes, a Ferrari and a Porsche is the death of the father of a family in a Skoda.
Above some speed passengers can easily die even if the cabin is not crushed and doors still open, no matter whether the hit is from the front, back or a side.

Here is a a Civic Touring that was rear ended by a Ram 1500 at 50 mph. The passenger compartment held up well, and the driver walked away with minor injuries. Maybe the Touring has a stronger structure. Video:

The more I read, the more this account seems like a troll account.

Lack of damage or more damage is not an accurate measure of forces sent to the passenger. In my opinion, the more damage a car suffers, the less energy is transferred to the occupants. To think Honda "scrimps" on lower trim levels in safety is wrong. Most cars have a lower strength steel in the rear with the entire back acting like a giant bumper in the event of a collision. The entire structure acts as a unit.

I'm monitoring this story to see what kind of speeds were involved. No matter how well engineered a car is, you're not invulnerable to life-threatening injuries, although that likelihood is reduced in well-engineered cars.

Someone said that double the speed limit was involved and I tend to agree with that estimate.

I'm extremely sure that all Civic sedans have the same exact structural integrity across the whole spectrum. The safety rating of a Civic Touring is exactly the same as an LX Sedan, which means that there is no variation in structure, otherwise Honda would be blatantly lying and would have been caught by now. The reason the back is weaker is because the back consists of more empty space and therefore more room for the rear end to crumple on impact, unlike the front which has the engine and all the other components so the amount of crumple is greatly reduced.

The occupant compartment shouldn't crumple. The crumple should stop at the trunk. Any more than that is too much. If there were rear seat passengers in this accident, they would have been crushed. You don't want the entire rear half of the car to crumple, especially if there are rear seat passengers.
