OP - Getting back on topic...I'd say go test drive a few cars and see which you like best. If you can't get a hold of a Golf R, do the next best thing and drive a GTI. Obviously there will be differences, but you can get a good enough taste to see what you like. Same goes for any other model.

I also wouldn't worry too much about reliability or horror stories. EVERY car has them. FWIW, out of all the cars I've owned, my Honda's had more problems then my Fords - which have had zero. Go figure. Look on the forums for reliability (or lack of) trends and put your mind at ease.

Think about what you want the car to do for you. Look at reviews and forums, too. However, the bottom line is - reviews can only help you so much...get your butt in a seat and drive some! :)

Thanks for getting back on topic :). Still waiting on the 2018 Golf R release information, and to check one out when it hits the show rooms. Yeah I hear the GTI is a great car as well, optioned out with the autobahn edition it's only a few thousand cheaper then a Golf R.

You're right about the reliability, it really just depends. Friend mine had a 14 WRX hatchback that blew the motor within 30K miles or so (stock). I did check the Golf forums and did not come across anything that would scare me away. Would definitely get the extended warranty. On average German cars may have more issues then Japanese vehicles, but it's kind of the price you have to pay as German cars generally have way more tech. Really interested in adaptive cruise control and apparently Honda's is one of the worst ACC's with Audi being one of the best.

I really wish Honda made the Type R a direct competitor to the Golf R, as in a performance automatic with AWD.

I personally don't think I would get a VW. But based on looks; vw owns the hatch department.
Makes the R look a lil ridiculous

Too much to focus on numbers.

Myself. I always put DESIGN as my number one priority.

Don't get me wrong I love the Golf R but the interior like other VW are BLAND. Reminds me of Honda the last 10 years but the got the CivicX right, or else I would've never bought it.

Type R.

I would definitely go for the Type R over the Golf R.

Judging from the Jalopik spec chart the Type R got the Golf R beat in several categories such as; Top Speed, Curb Weight, and Drag Coeffecient.

The interior of the Type R is better in my opinion. It looks newer and more modern. With red bucket Recaro seats as standard on the Type R. Combined that with the modern amenities up-to-date look of the Civic gen X with a touch of that race like look of the Type R. Just me thinking about it makes my toes curved and my balls cringed ... The Golf R interior on the other hand feels more premium. But i can't help to think, "this is a VW and i'm seating in a 10 year old design vehicle". Both interior and exterior wise o_O.

Type R FTW

Who the hell would want to work on that. I can't imagine opening that thing up.
Honda Civic 10th gen TYPE R VS 18 GOLF R v8_audi_timing_chain_failure_repair_1-
I think it looks pretty good to anyone who has had a timing belt slip on an Interference engine :)

But them it looks pretty bad if you imagine the Dealer's bill for opening it up to service it :(

My buddy got a 2018 golf R a couple months ago. He purchased with an extended warranty (with no plans on tuning) so he hasnt been too concerned about the reliability factor. Not sure if that's an angle you'd be interested in.

Overall, I think it seems like a pretty competent car in the twisties and as a daily, but the driving experience is a bit more subdued. I have an Si and I think the driving experience is a lot more raw, except maybe in straight line speed. Maybe I haven't driven it at its limits enough, but it seemed to be a bit bland despite its on-paper resume.

As far as AWD, since you're in socal, I think the only place you'd miss it is if you head up to the mountains or if you plan on launching off the line a lot. Otherwise, it sounds like the revo-knuckle setup in the type R handles torque steer pretty well. I havent really seen one review that says AWD would make it a better car. Also, I've been dealing with my fair share of bumper to bumper up north around the bay and it's annoying, but the car makes it worth it!

In the end, I think it boils down to what's more important to you: engagement or comfort?
