Doesn't look like a very practical hatchback. GTI/Golf R are always more appealing because they are performance cars, AND are highly practical. Hyundai will be a killer in terms of performance-to-price ratio though.

Yeah, it's not as practical since the boot is a bit on the smaller side. Though might be less of an issue compared to the idea that the rear passenger space only has a single door.

I know it's me... but Hyundais offerings were so poor that I have owned/experienced in the past... no matter how good this car looks 'on paper' it's going to be hard to get hung up folks like me even on their lot to consider one. It's not about the day you drive it off the lot... it's how it ages after you do.

That all being said, they have made significant strides and I applaud them at providing good competition to keep the brands I shop for to not get lazy. Nothing about my hang ups takes away from their accomplishments. They definitely deserve one of those big 'most improved player' trophy's time and time again for the last decade.

Totally agree with you. My mom and aunts drive kias (similar in almost every way to hyundai) and she's had good luck overall with it, but all i've ever owned is honda's and even though my mom and aunt's experiences have been generally good, my honda's have still always been better.

I looked at the first gen veloster back when the god awful 2012 civics came out and i'm thankful honda corrected that mistake now. I still like the look of the veloster, i love coupe hatches but there isn't much of an active market for those here in the USA, pretty much the Veloster is the only one now that the tC is no more.

My BIGGEST gripe with hyundai/kia is like you said, they look good on paper, but perform much worse in practice, especially their turbo charged engines, which while rated at decent power/torque seem to underperform every single time. The 2.0T sonata and optimas are slower to 60 than the 1.5T civics despite having almost 100 more horsepower... same goes for the 1.6T hyundai and kia uses, while making 201hp it performs only marginally better (or worse depending on application) than the 1.5T in the civics with only 174hp. I just don't understand why their engines can make so much more power and yet be monumentally slower than their lower powered competition. I've heard it has alot to do with their transmission gearing tbh.

That all said, the new veloster looks awesome, i doubt the N will be a true Golf R/Type R competitor given it's way down on power by comparison, but should be good competition for the Si and GTI and most likely at a similar price point to those cars. If hyundai got the rest of the car right (handling, grip, fun to drive nature, etc) then they'll have a winner on their hands regardless, fastest to 60 hardly ever means something is automatically best, and while i know this is supposed to be the hardcore sporty model, i can't help but feel they might have better luck if they offered an automatic transmission option for the N along with the manual, help boost sales and align it more closely with what the GTI offers customers.

Hyundai claims this will be in the 25K bracket:thumbsup:I like the way it looks except for the head unit and some of the interior materials look on the cheap side. Will definitely at least go see one in the flesh.

Fun and engaging take priority over unbridled speed

"Driving enjoyment is the whole point of an N car," Albert Biermann, president and head of Performance Development and High-Performance Vehicle Division, Hyundai Motor Group, told Road and Track. "We developed it for driving fun, for nice challenging mountain roads or a tiny challenging race track. We don’t care about lap times. If you’re going for lap times, the aero settings are different, the suspension setting is different. It’s faster for a professional driver, but it’s not as enjoyable. We don’t care for that. We want many people to enjoy this N experience, people who might not have driven a sporty car before."

I love that Tangerine Comet color, same as my soon to be 2018 Hyundai Kona with highly efficient 175 hp 1.6 T-GDI and 7 spd DCT.

The Veloster N Sparked a War of Words Between Hyundai and VW
This new rivalry could get interesting

We’ve known it was in the works and would be closely related to the i30 N sold in Europe, but we had no idea it would debut so soon. If Hyundai’s testing chief is to be believed, the Veloster N will be a blast to drive while offering a little more daily practicality than a Honda Civic Type R. But a conversation he had with another outlet about the Veloster N may have started the War of the Hot Hatches between Hyundai and Volkswagen.
  • Speaking to Australia’s Motoring, Albert Biermann, the head of Hyundai’s N division, promised that the Veloster N would be much more capable on the track than most of its competitors, as well as more fun to drive. In the process, though, he took aim at the longtime king of hot hatches, the Volkswagen GTI.

“There can be GTIs that are suitable for the track driving, but if you take the standard GTI, it’s not like that,” he said. “So with the N we clearly want to be more suitable for track driving, and give it more character and the most important thing—make it much more fun to drive.” But Biermann didn’t stop there.

“It’s a great car,” he said, describing the GTI, “but after two laps the fun is over. I mean you know.” When asked for more details about what went wrong after the second lap, he responded, “Everything.”

The first comment wasn’t particularly controversial, as it focused on how Hyundai wanted to position the Veloster N in the segment. But the second comment went further, claiming the GTI couldn’t handle track duty. After Motoring published those quotes in an article, Michael Bartsch, the head of Volkswagen Australia, had a few words for Biermann.

“Extraordinary claims are being made for supposed rivals that are not yet on sale. While any skunkworks can turn out a track day special, the expertise and experience required to engineer a GTI or an R—cars that also excel in the real world—is rather more hard won,” Bartsch told Motoring. “When you’ve owned a GTI or an R, it’s difficult to settle for anything less. Volkswagen offers not only the most accomplished fast and fun compact cars in the world, it provides the world’s widest range. There is now a performance Golf for everyone.”

We certainly understand why Bartsch would want to respond, but it’s a little surprising to see him go on the record like that. Usually, when executives are asked to respond to comments from someone at another automaker, their response is something along the lines of, “We welcome this new competition. A rising tide raises all ships.” Something about Biermann’s comments must have gotten under his skin.

Then again, maybe it has less to do with the comments themselves and more to do with who made them. Before Biermann joined Hyundai, he was the head of BMW’s M division. He has more than three decades of experience developing high-performance vehicles, and if anyone can help Hyundai build a credible GTI killer, it’s Biermann. Priced right, the Veloster N could do some real damage to the GTI’s sales numbers.

Whether Volkswagen does or not, we have to say, we certainly welcome its new rivalry with Hyundai. Fresh competition will force this whole segment to improve, and when the cars get better, drivers win.

I think if Honda, VW and others don't take this seriously … they should. This isn't just another Hyundai. It's fine tuned by the same guy who was the head of the BMW M division. Looking at the stats, it ticks a lot of the boxes anyone would want in a "hot hatch". Also this isn't coming out from no where. This builds upon the successful 130N which has been successfully selling in Europe. All the competitors should beware about this car. It's the first real sports car from Hyundai to enter the Americas.

The good news for us Honda fans, is this might help the Civic R to come back to earth in price. The markups are so high now because of lack of competition. I would definitely choose the R over this on performance. I would love if the Civic R would be offered in the coupe.

After watching multiple reviews of the Veloster/V. Turbo my biggest gripe is that Hyundai has the audacity to charge, essentially the same amount of money compared to a civic/Si for these cars but they're way down on quality, especially the interiors.

The civics don't have a TON of soft touch surfaces, but the upper dash, upper doors, door inserts in the civic are all soft touch... ALL of those are hard touch plastic in the Veloster. And while visually it doesn't look bad, for the same amount of money i'd expect the same level of fit and finish to a car given that they want $20-25k for a Regular or Turbo Veloster and i can get into a comparable civic trim for the same amount.

Granted, the N is most likely going to undercut the CTR by a pretty wide margin, but given that it's down on interior refinement and raw performance numbers, that would justify the higher cost of the CTR in my mind.

I honestly think that Hyundai is a fine brand of car now because of one reason, value for money. I could have gotten an Elantra Sport with the 1.6T engine for the same price as my 2.0L EX Civic, if not cheaper. When you are thinking about it, Hyundai offers a lot more bang for your buck and isn't exactly lagging behind in features. I have a feeling as with most hyundais on Paper the MSRP will be close to its competitors but in a real world scenario i'm sure you could snag this Hyundai for a lot less than any of its competitors, which makes a difference.
