How can Hyundai get it so right, and Honda so wrong?

I think Honda wants us to hear more engine sound instead of the 3 pipes in the back. I like it. My old M3 doesn't have much exhaust either . But engine sings at high rpms .

To the OP: Did you already purchase a Type R? Maybe instead of yapping all over the CTR sub-forum, try purchasing one first.

You're creating threads and posting replies when you don't even own one.

Sorry to break it to you, I'm just being honest.

Now if you own one already, congratulations! Post pictures.;)

On topic: the exhaust note can easily be remedied by purchasing aftermarket exhaust. That simple.

An active exhaust adds weight and complexity. I have one in my GT4 and the uncontrollable switch to loud at high rpm is why I can't pass sound at Laguna Seca. That's two strikes. An active exhaust is a toy so it makes sense that it's on a ferrari, a car sold more for cars and coffee than track days (I see way more McLarens than Ferraris at a track day). Another way to look at it is that if you can engineer a quiet exhaust that makes almost exactly the same power as a loud exhaust, then the loud option is just for image. Yawn.

I mean within a certain sound noise limit, make it sound great, but I don't need a silly button for my exhaust.
First off the GT4 is my second favorite Porsche after a manual GT3.
That's what living in a free country is so great, I can have my sporty, aggressive exhaust note, and you can have your quiet one.
I can guarantee one thing, if you take out both a 911 Turbo and a GT3, the GT3 will be the more exciting, visceral drive, which has a lot to do with the sounds the car makes, and the exhaust note in particular.

I like the CTR sound but I can definitely see it not being enough of a presence for some. An active exhaust is a solid idea but probably not as a default- maybe a factory option?

Having an option like PSE available from Honda is a great thought but it's just not the way they build or market any products. Porsche's "options" are basically their business model. Works for them but probably wouldn't for others.

Now, shift the discussion to torque steer and Honda easily wins that battle, one that plays a more tangible, direct role in the performance and joy one gets from driving. There is no such thing as the perfect car - they are compromises in every sense of the word. I, for one, am happy to not have stock anti-lag or a fuel injector in one of the exhaust pipes to create a gimmicky sound. And just from the clips I've heard, no one is going to mistake an I30-N for a Porsche GT3 or a Ferrari of any stripe. That it may be better than Honda is completely subjective and frankly very personal.

I personally prefer my cars to be quiet, both inside and out. And it's the main reason why I'm not driving a Cayman today -- it's just really loud, all the time.

Yeah I couldn't disagree with the OP more - I think the CTR exhaust is perfect the way it is. I'll echo the comments on making my neighbors upset late nights & early morning as well as caring more about the volume knob haha.

I want it to sound good (which it does), but I just don't believe a 4 cylinder can possibly sound "impressive" - at least I've never heard one and gone "Wow!" Leave that to engines with between 8-16 cylinders. I'd rather be able to drive it around my neighborhood and not feel like a high school kid who wishes he had a V8 under the hood haha.

But +1:
What’s wrong with 6 cylinders?
RB26DETT, 2JZ, any Porsche Flat 6

I really hope they do something about the look of the exhaust.
I have no problem with 3 pipes as long as they're the same size.
Let's see what the MY19 will bring...

Cheers! I can understand having the option even if I don't care for loud mode; I think I'd be less annoyed if mine didn't go to loud above 5000 rpm even when it's in quiet!

The grunt sounds great to me. Isn’t the car flashy enough?

Function over flash for me.

I dunno, once you start hammering this thing past 4K RPM it’s plenty exciting to hear. It’s like a crescendo from 2k to 4K RPM, and then BOOM, from there until redline it will make you want to push it more and more until you bounce off the rev limiter.

Maybe on the outside it’s quiet, but that’s a good thing, because I know loud exhausts will get plenty of extra scrutiny from the 5-0.

False.

There are federal and state dB limits for how loud your exhaust can be.

You're not free to do whatever you please, you just get away with it until a bored police officer decides to pull you over for it.

Don't get me wrong, I run open header cars ... on the drag track.

Hire/poach some German engineers over from Audi, BMW, etc. The Type R is the godzilla car, ie. very Japanese engineering/design.
LOL at "Godzilla". The CTR isn't even close to be consider to be "Godzilla". More like a handicap missing two limbs (needs all AWD). The CTR is great, but once you get pass the honeymoon phase, you begin to see the limitation of FWD power-train really quickly.

And it isn't like the CTR isn't screaming that it's a race car already...
