Polished Metal Civic Sport. Thinking of plasti dipping the stock rims to metalic gold. Has anyone done this so far? what do you think of the color combination?

I think it might look a bit tacky, but there's only one way to find out... I could be totally wrong.

That's the thing about dip, nothing is permanent. I say go for it and report back!

I'm thinking about plasti dipping mine white and black polished accents. I haven't gotten around to it yet though. If you do yours, post some pics.

I've seen a lot of youtube vids about plasti dipping rims and it turned out really nice. But of course I'm seeing what was just finished and not what it looked after a month or so.

In my experience with dip it can last for a long time looking like new if you just wash it often. I’ve thought about doing this to my Si as well but haven’t had the time

I've seen some videos that say it's a pain with plastidip rims. It tends to collect a lot of dust. I recently wrapped mine 3 weeks ago matte black and it looks great.

I attempted to wrap my rims white and the cuts came out terrible. I ended up scrapping the whole project. Still thinking about plasti-dipping but not sure how I'll go about taping off all the areas I don't want painted.

I did Gold Metalizer over black base on my WRX winter wheels. I love how it came out.

The over spray comes right off if you put a good coating of tire shine on the tire. Make absolutely sure there is no tire shine on the wheel when you spray. It's very satisfying peeling that over spray off too. Just make sure you actually spray the tire too, otherwise you'll have to pressure wash it off.

Using yellow 3M tape as an edge, mask off the areas you want protected from the dip. When you go to peel the tape, have a Q-Tip and some Naphtha thinner handy. Use the Q-Tip to apply Naphtha to the edge when peeling the tape. This should give you a very clean break. Any edges that lift, put some Naphtha under the lifted edge and push it back into place. The dip will soften with the Naphtha and adhere itself to the surface again.

I have plasti-dipped a couple times but I only want to paint the machined metal and not the black background. It'll be a lot of masking that I'm not looking forward to.

@Snoopyslr any thoughts on making the masking part easier/simpler?

I despise masking things off like this. I do have one idea, but I've never tried it and have no clue if it would work or not. You could dip the entire wheel. Then use Naphtha to soften the edge you want to peel and try using a plastic scraper to run over the edge and break it. Then you may be able to just peel the parts you don't want dipped off after they've been separated. Again, never tried.

Honestly tho, as much as I hate to endorse vinyl because I hate it for these kinds of applications, vinyl might be your easiest option. The surface you're trying to wrap is flat and planer, and the surface you want to remove is all recessed. You could just lay your vinyl sheet on the wheel, squeegee it on to the flat surface, then easily cut out the area that you want removed. Just use a high quality vinyl, or it will come off or scratch and look like garbage after a few weeks.

I had the same idea and have experience with vinyl. Even wrapped the vinyl on one wheel but when I started to etch/cut the design out with an x-acto knife the cuts came out jagged/terrible. Best option would probably be using knifeless tape but it's still a ton of manual work

There is also the option to use masking fluid and the plasti-dip but the fluid isn't very cheap for the amount I'd need. So far not an easy cheap solution for what I want.

Anyone know of any paint that can be applied with a paint brush that would hold up?
